Scream

How could something so awful happen somewhere so lovely? This movie is clearly very inspired by the work of Alfred Hitchcock, from its mysterious storyline to the movie's score to the murderous husband being named after the most infamous mama's boy in cinematic history, Norman Bates from Psycho.

What Lies Beneath came out in 2000, and this was a really exciting time for horror, as ushered in by the big, shiny, late '90s makeover that horror got thanks to movies like Scream, thank you very much.

What was once a low-rent genre became one that drew A-list stars, top directors like Robert Zemeckis, and final girls wearing cashmere in Vermont.

[thunder crashing] [laughs]The human psyche is a marvelous thing, and it has incredible ways of helping us avoid things we don't want to look at.

And you're like, wait, what's this movie about?

You're watching Scream and you just see Drew Barrymore over all the posters.

And then you watch Scream and she's gone in the first 10 minutes.

And you're like, oh, oh, what are we actually talking about here? Because you think Last Great American Dynasty, she's going to give you this love song like Starlight.

And instead, she's like, no, actually, we don't need to define.

But then you violated them.

So what are the consequences? you know we told you ahead of time don't do this but then you guys ended up doing it so what's going to happen and i love that um elkhead woman basically exacted she turned into essentially a slasher it's this kind of creature that he conjured up and it ended up being a slasher like those movies that i loved since you know fight of the 13th you know and uh i think steven like Aside from Scream, I think Friday the 13th is his favorite franchise.

So you definitely feel it.

It's almost like Elkhead Woman.

horror in the States too, like, like, um, uh, stuff made here in Hollywood.

Scream came out in 96.

But it didn't come out, I don't think, until after...

It'd be one thing if you had seen a bunch of horror movies and you never saw Scream 1 and you just jumped into Scream 2 and you're like, oh, I get it.

I see what it's doing, what it's spoofing.

But you didn't see the original and you haven't seen the material that it's spoofing.

But, yeah, like, I will always go see them because stuff like this happens.

I mean, it was the same with Scream, right? Like, Scream 1, amazing.

Scream 2, pretty good.

Scream 3, eh.

I love Scream 3.

I know I'm a crazy person.

And then Scream 4, fucking fantastic.

My favorite one other than the original.

A24 is the one that, like, stands out to me the most and gets me excited because the likes of Ari Aster and Robert Eggers.

I know Robert Eggers doesn't work with... uh a24 anymore he's working with focus features but generally like that type of atmospheric it's all in the filmmaking and how you compose a shot and just the eeriness and the creepiness of it because like i know my brother is a humongous slasher fan like that that's his thing yeah um i guess i'm jen i'm you know, Jen Ortega from the beginning of the Scream movie where it's just like elevated horror.

I like A24 movies.

So basic.
