Scout rifle

People have asked me, you know, if you could only have one rifle for the rest of your life, what would it be? And I would get a .308 Winchester, which is obviously hard to argue with, but it would be a scout rifle because I could do...

90% of anything I ever needed to do with the rifle short of having some massive gun battle, you know.

Right.

I'd be well armed.

That question Richard just answered, if you could only have one rifle for the rest of your life for both hunting and personal defense, is exactly what Jeff Cooper was trying to answer with his scout rifle concept.

Hello, I am John McAdams.

Richard Mann is back on the Big Game Hunting podcast today to discuss scout rifles.

Richard has spent years testing Cooper's scout rifle concept at the range and in the field to include a couple of scout rifle safaris to Africa.

I just, I shop with them a lot, have for a long time.

I saw an in-stock alert for the Ruger Gunsite Scout rifle.

This is the old M-- the Hawkeye controlled round feed, M77 style controlled round feed Ruger Scout rifle.

The new ones are cheap plastic push feeds.

I wonder why.

It's a phenomenal rifle.

It's one of my go-to scouting rifles.

It's a scout rifle.

But a good lever action .30-30 with a good modern optic and LPVO on the top, that'd be hard to beat.

And there's probably a subsection of the audience that's screaming at the microphone or the radio or whatever they're listening on their phone saying the scout rifle, the scout rifle, the scout rifle.

I want to get a scout rifle and run it through its paces.

I would really like to get a Ruger 77 stainless steel controlled round feed.

And I would like to get one of those in the future and run one and actually put it through its paces and What gets me on that is the bolt action.

I don't know.

I guess to be fair, I don't know.

I haven't run a scout rifle.
