Scotty Smalls

And the narrator of these stories is typically the grown-up version of the story's main character.

In this case, it's grown-up Scotty Smalls, who is now a Major League Baseball announcer.

But looking back at the beginning of the greatest summer of his childhood, Scotty was a lonely kid who moved to a new town just two weeks before the end of fifth grade.

And I'm not sure how that works in reality with like new school grades.

How do you finish the year? I don't understand that works.

All he's got is his mom, who seems amazing, and his stepdad, Bill, who is less so

than amazing.

And the story didn't necessarily need to include anything more than a couple mentions of Scotty's parents, but I'm glad it does.

Yeah.

So The Sandlot tells a story of this young boy, he's about 12 years old, it's the summer after fifth grade, and his name is Scotty Smalls.

"You're killing me, Smalls."

[laughs]

Mm-hmm.

Smalls too, I think.

Uh, I could see them jumping around on that a little bit too, but, uh, Ham was, yeah, there was only, you know, one type of guy.

Let's talk about Smalls.

I mean, it's the-

Yeah

... it's the, the catchphrase that to this day [laughs] we still get.

"You're killing me, Smalls."

... you know, a little Ham, Ham Porter-y.

And I play the sort of straight man, you know, Scotty Smalls, like, out of his league, you know, uh, type of guy.

So, um, 12 pages was crazy.

We had the fire department on set at our field twice in one day.
