Um, I- I made the comment, I, I repeated to her in this interview that I'm really impressed with the people that have come forward, even, uh, how do I put this? Even if I don't agree with them, uh, i- in terms of their political bent, right, the orient- the political orientation being left ring- w- left wing, right wing, all that.
Marty GoldHOST
1:17
Even if I don't come from the same side, you can see that there is, in fact, a growing sense of commonality in Winnipeg between left and right with dissatisfaction with the way things have been run under Mayor Scott Gillingham in the last four years.
Marty GoldHOST
1:29
And Gillingham doesn't carry all the blame.
Marty GoldHOST
1:31
The other councilors, uh, also being subject to the slings and arrows of those who say that there's better ways, that, uh, spending has gotten out of control, that think that, uh, that crime, public safety, has not been properly addressed.
Molly McCrackenGUEST
41:21
I think it's also this issue of civil society, and so I'm so glad you're, you know, breaking down how to go present in delegation, how to go talk to your representatives there.
Molly McCrackenGUEST
41:33
Um, what I am gonna watch for is what is Scott Gillingham, who's the lead candidate, going to say on his position on taxes? He's probably still gonna go with his 3.5%, um, which was his position previously, and that will really strap us into a very narrow, uh, financial or tight financial situation for the city of Winnipeg.
Molly McCrackenGUEST
41:58
So I think the more voices saying we need, uh, these third spaces, and then connecting it to what the pressure is is to spend on policing.
Molly McCrackenGUEST
42:07
And our alternative budget says, "Let's cut policing by 10%." That's been the position of the community that we work with for a long time because of the whole Black Lives Matter movement previously was very much looking at that, plus we actually, I work at the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives, have a paper coming out about, um, evidence-based practices to reduce crime.
Patty WiensHOST
44:02
some of that mental health burden away from the police and giving it to the right people who can handle those things.
Patty WiensHOST
44:10
Um, in any case, not getting into those kinds of details, but every election year seems to be in a fragile state, right? For example, [laughs] I'm going there.
Patty WiensHOST
44:22
Scott Gillingham is actually out campaigning in my neighborhood right now with Jeff Browaty, and nothing tells me m- more than this, that they are feeling fragile.
Molly McCrackenGUEST
44:36
Mm.
Sam BeikoHOST
5:38
[clears throat]
Patty WiensHOST
5:40
Uh, Scott Gillingham.
Sam BeikoHOST
5:41
My favorite.
Sam BeikoHOST
5:41
[laughs] Scotty G, [laughs] we have in our notes here.
Sam BeikoHOST
5:46
Scott Gillingham, Devi Sharma, Shawn "Dozy" Dobson, and Russ Wyatt, everyone's least favorite person on the planet.
Sam BeikoHOST
5:56
So these people don't believe that any of these things in this pledge are a priority, and they have made that known by saying, "No thanks" to trees.
Sam BeikoHOST
6:05
I would rather have an asphalt parking lot.
Brian MayesGUEST
22:18
Now I see what you're up against." And so she's, she's been out there trying her best to preserve her neighborhood in, in some fashion.
Marty GoldHOST
22:26
Um, did, during his term as mayor or for that matter, even in his term as the finance chair, did Scott Gillingham ever go personally to your ward to see this mess? I, I can't believe I'm in a position where I have to compliment Brian Bowman for doing something reasonable and sensible by doing so with you.
Marty GoldHOST
22:42
Did Scott Gillingham follow in those, uh, follow in the, those footsteps, so to speak? Did he ever see this for himself?
Brian MayesGUEST
22:49
Not that I remember, but I could be, could be wrong on that.
Brian MayesGUEST
22:53
I mean, the, the, the irony is the, the housing accelerator really doesn't affect these guys 'cause you, no one's gonna build a fourplex up here.
Marty GoldHOST
7:24
Suddenly, the city started to do things.
Marty GoldHOST
7:27
In this case, the city being Mayor Scott Gillingham's administration.
Marty GoldHOST
7:34
And I am proud to say That there's no, you know, somebody could tell me I'm wrong, but there's no coincidence that three locations in particular that I've been pounding on for months.
Marty GoldHOST
7:47
All summer, suddenly in the same week, I'll get some degree of service, including a hazmat team going out to the Riverwalk.
Marty GoldHOST
10:25
I mean, I got a fair amount of grief when I was on Kick FM, clearly.
Marty GoldHOST
10:30
But this work is important.

You can contribute by going to the Donate tab, or you can contact me directly, martygoldlive at gmail.com. A preliminary poll was issued last week indicating that among decided voters, Mayor Scott Gillingham was in the lead among decided voters.

Kevin Kline, who... is my is the publisher of the of the winnipeg sun and uh technically a boss of mine and i'm going to clarify a couple of misconceptions that are running out there uh he was showed up in second place very early in his campaign i don't know that he made more than like two policy announcements when that poll was in the field maybe only one 23 mike voyagis uh clocking in at 11 uh the other candidates uh various other candidates all clocking in basically at one percent um The poll was of around 600 people.
Sam BeikoHOST
3:10
And I wish that he would read the room.
Sam BeikoHOST
3:12
But unfortunately, as we can already see, especially in the mayoral candidates, white men just want a white man and are just flooding this ballot with nonsense.
Sam BeikoHOST
3:21
It is very exhausting.
Sam BeikoHOST
3:23
There are other candidates running in that ward.
Sam BeikoHOST
7:05
Sam? So anyone can register, Patty.
Sam BeikoHOST
7:08
But in order to get your name on the ballot, you have to get enough valid signatures.
Sam BeikoHOST
7:13
So for councillors, it's 25, but for mayoral candidates, it's actually 250 signatures.
Sam BeikoHOST
7:18
And when you collect those signatures, you also need folks' address to prove that they are citizens of this city.
Patty WiensHOST
1:50
We're not here to talk about that either.
Patty WiensHOST
1:51
In today's show, we'll be talking to a mayoral candidate, Noah Redden, and we'll discuss some questions that came up about school trustees, but they came in too late, so I wasn't able to ask the candidates at the time of the interview.
Patty WiensHOST
2:07
But I'll ask them on here and hope that our school trustee listeners will call in and give us their answers.
Patty WiensHOST
2:13
I also have part two of your election volunteering homework coming up in today's episode.
