GaryHOST
[film rolling] [gentle music] This week we answer the call with Black Phone one and The Black Phone two, both films.
GaryHOST
[laughs] Oh, what's going on with Andy? Directed by Scott Derrickson and starring Mason Thames, Madeleine McG- McGraw and Ethan Hawke.
GaryHOST
This chilling se- ...
GaryHOST
Well, we're, we're talking about the sequel is initially why we got this together.
Greg GreeneHOST
That's hysterical.
Greg GreeneHOST
You know, I think about I'm a big fan of filmmaker Scott Derrickson, and he based his film Deliver Us from Evil.
Greg GreeneHOST
Love that movie.
Greg GreeneHOST
Yeah, me too.
Greg GreeneHOST
He later went on to be a self-professed demonologist and would get involved with exorcisms and stuff.
Greg GreeneHOST
It's strange and very interesting, quite intriguing.
Greg GreeneHOST
But Scott Derrickson was shown some like VHS tapes of real exorcisms and weird things that were in Ralph Sarchie's collection.
Greg GreeneHOST
And some of that was he found Derrickson found quite disturbing.
SharaiHOST
But I, I do wanna say before I get into my issues with this movie, I love that Ethan Hawke loves the genre.
SharaiHOST
I love that he keeps being in movies even if I don't enjoy any of the movies, because I also wasn't a girl for The Purge, I wasn't a girl [laughs] for The Black Phone, and I think that I'm just not the audience for Scott Derrickson and Mr. Cargill, which, I mean, again, there's an audience for everything.
SharaiHOST
I don't have to love everything, but I just outside the club I think, 'cause I'm always left going, "Oh, okay, I'm happy you all like it." [laughs] And then I'm like, "I want my time back." Um-
Lawrence NaffGUEST
I love that for you guys.
SimonHOST
Today, we're going to review The Day the Earth Stood Still.
SimonHOST
The Day the Earth Stood Still, played by 2008, is a modern reimagining of the 1951 classic directed by Scott Derrickson and written by David Scarpa.
SimonHOST
The film stars Keanu Reeves as Klaatu, an alien visitor, Jennifer Connelly as Dr Helen Benson, and Kathy Bates as the Secretary of Defence.
SimonHOST
The movie attempts to update the original's Cold War themes to address contemporary environmental concerns, but it struggles to find its footing amidst a mix of impressive visuals and a muddled narrative.
Mike SmithHOST
Looking forward to that.
Mike SmithHOST
Meanwhile, I'm making you watch Sinister, the 2012 film directed by Scott Derrickson starring Ethan Hawke, which, of course, those two would later go on to make The Black Phone, which is decent.
Mike SmithHOST
But Sinister, I think, is way better.
Mike DeCristoforoHOST
Okay.
Mike SmithHOST
I've never seen it.
Mike SmithHOST
I don't.
Mike SmithHOST
Scott Derrickson didn't direct it, I don't think.
Mike SmithHOST
Okay.
Kutter CallawayGUEST
Now, we can talk about do you need to show and do everything that The Exorcist did? Okay.
Kutter CallawayGUEST
Scott Derrickson, who's a friend, did The Exorcism of Emily Rose, and his, his conviction is that he told the de- the, the details of that story as they were to be faithful to the real-world woman whose story it was based upon.
Kutter CallawayGUEST
Um, and he even has an interesting story about talking to the, you know, studio execs at one point, and they were like, "You're making this too Christian." And then he's like, "No, I'm not." And he's like, "I'm just telling her story." And that was, that was the story.
Kutter CallawayGUEST
They relented.

Joshua JohnsonHOST
... wa- watched a horror movie, uh, once and never wants to watch another movie [laughs] horror movie again.
Joshua JohnsonHOST
He's done.
Joshua JohnsonHOST
And then, like, Scott Derrickson, who actually works in horror and writes and, and like i- is, like, immersed in it.
Joshua JohnsonHOST
Like, those two contrasts, what did you learn between, like, two contrasts? [laughs]
ToddHOST
Yeah.
JoeHOST
And now it is time, ladies and gentlemen, for our main event of the evening, 2012's Sinister, directed by Scott Derrickson and starring Juliet Rylance, Fred Thompson, Vincent D'Onofrio, James Ransone, and Ethan Hawke as Ellison Oswalt.
JoeHOST
So Ellison is his first name.
JoeHOST
Oswalt's his last name.
LanceHOST
Okay, whatever.
LanceHOST
They heard close to 30 different pitches before they chose the concept presented by Scott Derrickson and Paul Harris Boardman.
LanceHOST
Does Scott Derrickson ring a bell for you, my friend? It should.
LanceHOST
He is the director of The Exorcist of Emily Rose, the first Doctor Strange movie, Sinister, as well as the Black Phone films.
LanceHOST
Ah, okay.
Michael McCullochPANELIST
It is rated R and runs about an hour and 40 minutes.
Michael McCullochPANELIST
It's a psychological horror mystery thriller directed by Scott Derrickson, starring, probably you haven't heard of these, the little boy is Mason Thames.
Michael McCullochPANELIST
His sister is Madeline McGraw.
Michael McCullochPANELIST
And the sadistic kidnapper, also known as the grabber, is played by Ethan Hawke.
MarkHOST
Yeah, I agree about the 8mm stuff.
MarkHOST
It's a little bit of a trademark almost of Scott Derrickson now because it goes right back to Sinister when they did that sort of 10
TracyHOST
years, 15 years prior to this.
TracyHOST
And, yeah, it's just –

AdamHOST
And also, just a question, is this based on a Joe Hill story or did he write this script for this movie?
MarkHOST
No, no.
MarkHOST
The same two people who wrote the first Black Phone, which was C. Robert Cargill and Scott Derrickson, they wrote the screenplay.
MarkHOST
Joe Hill just wrote the short story for the first one that was based on.
