But science is so much more than just a bunch of facts, because they had to come from somewhere.

They are the end products of a process, a process of discovery called the scientific method.

This is a structured, no-nonsense way of figuring out how the world works.

Instead of relying on guesswork, gut-level intuition, tradition, or superstitious mumbo jumbo, the scientific method uses evidence to test ideas.

Coworkers chatting around the office water cooler in the '70s and '80s would say things like, "Hey, so did you watch the game last night? And also, did you know that American robins find worms using only their sense of sight?" But not everyone accepted this as fact.

In the '90s, a couple of scientists, Robert Montgomery and Patrick Weatherford, were feeling skeptical.

And that's good because, as I mentioned earlier, skepticism is a key component of the scientific process.

So here we have a... study was done that shows only a fraction of one percent of the papers published in scientific journals follow the actual scientific method okay so all those scientists all that science all the scientific studies less than one percent of them are actual science understand this.

The rest of that is politics, pharmacopoeia, money, interests, and censorship, sort of all mixing and mingling together.

But before inferring that it was the sole or even chief cause of the improvement, we must inquire what other changes were taking place at the same time, and how much of the improvement is to be referred to each of them.

You say what it would prove it false.

Yeah.

Right.

But the scientific method in academia pre-TED was supposed to be like, you have an interesting finding, you publish your data, then somebody else goes, oh, that's interesting.

Finally, a framework for all of those problems I was trying to solve in my head.
