But the king of Denmark declined to submit tamely to such a partition of his dominions and proceeded to employ force to prevent it.

A Prussian army entered the duchies to support their freedom.

But just as the Frankfurt parliament seemed to be about to win a triumph through the loyal support of Prussia, it became apparent that the king's action was not dictated by real sympathy with unitary ideas.

Already tending towards reaction himself and alarmed at the prospect of international complications, he concluded the truce of Malmö with Denmark, by which Schleswig-Holstein was to be administered provisionally by the Danish government with Prussian assistance.

The Frankfurt parliament indignantly rejected such a sacrifice of popular aspirations.

The German people have adopted, by virtue of their constituent power, this basic law.

The Germans in the lander of Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria, Berlin, Brandenburg, Bremen, Hamburg, Hesse, Lower Saxony, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, North Rhine-Westphalia, Rhineland-Palatinate, Saarland, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, Schleswig-Holstein, and Thuringia have achieved the unity and freedom of Germany and free self-determination.

This basic law is thus valid for the entire German people.

See, this is the way, this is teaching.

Some of these names are real mouthfuls.

We've got a Königgratz, we've got a Schleswig-Holstein, a lot of von this and von that.

There's a lot of consonants in German.
