Saviors

The record may not rank among Green Day's finest achievements, but it belongs in the larger story of a band that has rarely been content to repeat itself indefinitely.

In January 2024, Green Day released Saviors, and here's what I found interesting about this record.

It sounds like a band reconnecting with the qualities that made it successful in the first place.

Strong melodies, punchy guitars, memorable choruses, and songs that don't overstay their welcome.

Life changes.

And the best songwriters find ways to reflect those changes in their music.

Saviors demonstrates that Green Day still knows how to make a compelling rock record.

And it also reminds us that sometimes the most effective reinvention is reconnecting with what made you great in the first place.

And I listen to the album from front to back for the first time.

I did that with the new Yellowcard last year, and it was so cool, and then I did it with the, the Green Day record, Saviors.

It came out a couple years ago, and it was...

It's hard.

I bought my copy new at Strictly Discs for $24.99.

In the first season, I covered the 2024 Green Day release Saviors, so folks who have listened to that episode might remember that many years ago, in 1994 to be precise, I saw Green Day live when they were touring in support of this album.

At the time, I had the CD.

Outside of The Beatles, I tend not to buy v- vinyl versions of albums I already own on CD.

While they have a punk attitude and punk instrumentation and punk tempo, the songs have catchy melodies.

Look, I like the Dead Kennedys too, but Jello Biafra wasn't sweating over vocal lines, if you get it, get my meaning.

In the first season, like I said, I covered the 2024 release from Green Day, Saviors.

In that episode, I talked about how I'm the same age as the guys from Green Day, and I felt that exploration on being punk, yet being unapologetically middle-aged, made a lot of sense to me.

Oh, no.

These albums were followed by Revolution Radio, 2016, their third to debut at number one on the Billboard 200, Father of All MFers, 2020, and Saviors, 2024.

So I think Revolution Radio...

Which one of these...
