[transition sound] For now, I'd like to round out today's episode, but before I do, I want to say that folks around Saugatuck, Michigan, which is vaguely near Grand Rapids, Michigan, are observing ice volcanoes on the beaches of Lake Michigan.

These amazing piles of ice are geysering slush in ways we talk about happening on other worlds and we can now see on our own world.

In February of 1978, the then 23-year-old Hope College student went on a solo cross-country skiing trip near Lake Michigan and failed to return as planned.

The following day, snowmobilers in Saugatuck discovered abandoned cross-country skis and a backpack.

They reported their findings to the authorities, sparking a massive search for the missing student.

Throughout the search, various unexpected events took place.

... we joined forces and opened a gallery in Saugatuck, Michigan, and it, uh, it lasted for three or four years, and then it just got to be too much with all of our travels and things and, and we closed it up.

Well, financially, would it have still been viable if you weren't traveling as much?

Um, I, it probably would.

Saug- we, we didn't have a great location.

Saugatuck, Michigan was a, was a tourist area, so we did really good when the tourists were in town.

But once the leaf peepers went away, it was a, it was a struggle.
