It's been quite a time.
Cathy AntunesHOST
0:52
I'd say the past, I don't know, maybe even 10 years on the Sarasota County School Board has been... you know, drama filled to a point where there's been national attention on our particular county.
Cathy AntunesHOST
1:11
Heidi, thank you so much for joining me.
Cathy AntunesHOST
1:13
I appreciate what it takes.
Cathy AntunesHOST
1:43
What would motivate anyone in this environment to run for a school board?
Mason GravleyHOST
1:24
So if you didn't know, and this is kind of the point of what I want to talk about is 25 counties in the state have a land acquisition program.
Mason GravleyHOST
1:33
similar to Manatee County, Sarasota County, Polk County has one, Marion County, I think, is getting ready to vote on one.
Mason GravleyHOST
1:41
But there are seven counties literally next week voting to either re-up the money that they contribute to that through a sales tax or through property taxes, or there's two that are starting an actual entire program.
Mason GravleyHOST
1:56
And so I serve as the chair for our program here in Manatee County called LMAC, Environmental Lands Management.
Mason GravleyHOST

Mason GravleyHOST
2:29
But I was not working in conservation at the time i listened back through this edit and think oh my gosh the questions would be so different today so please take that into consideration but two if you live in one of those seven counties which are listed there's a link in the show notes manatee county sarasota county is one of them marion county all those i mentioned i think brevard county there's there's seven total that will be voting and voting is november 3rd next week If you live on one of those, please consider reading that information if you want to support.
Mason GravleyHOST

I think your entitlements were about 22.5 or so for total units, but you're going to be bigger than that now.
Rick SeveranceGUEST
10:01
Yeah, we own 3,500 acres in unincorporated Sarasota County, and we're annexing that into the city of Northport.
Rick SeveranceGUEST
10:08
So at the end of the day, the entitlements are going to be probably closer to 29.
Rick SeveranceGUEST
10:11
You know, how does that play out over the course of market conditions and dips and what is multifamily versus single family? And I think that's all to be determined.

Rick SeveranceGUEST
16:01
We have four schools, you know, a charter K through eight, two VPKs, collegiate high school, college.
Rick SeveranceGUEST
16:07
If you'd have told me that when I first got here, I'd have told you you were crazy.
Rick SeveranceGUEST
16:10
But because Sarasota County's A-rated number one rated school system in the state of Florida.
Rick SeveranceGUEST
16:16
I think it's number one or number two.
Skye LeBronHOST
1:29
It'll cost the average Manatee household $34 a year.
Skye LeBronHOST
1:32
In Sarasota County, residents are deciding if they want to keep a current tax that funds programs to protect sensitive lands and neighborhood parks.
Skye LeBronHOST
1:39
That will cost the Sarasota County home $51 a year.
Skye LeBronHOST
1:42
on average.
Skye LeBronHOST

Even though the Rays got smacked in the World Series, local businesses walked out winners.
Taylor NeighboursGUEST
8:21
Absolutely.
Taylor NeighboursGUEST
8:22
Back in 2017, 2018, our community came together here in Manatee and Sarasota County to create a homeless response system.
Taylor NeighboursGUEST
8:31
So folks that are experiencing homelessness now can go to various access points and be assessed for housing opportunities.
Taylor NeighboursGUEST
8:39
Now, that doesn't mean that there's an infinite amount of opportunities available, but the first thing that we need to do is be able to identify folks.

34 MINS LATER

Taylor NeighboursGUEST

Taylor NeighboursGUEST

It is really important to celebrate these non-commercial stations that are literally in your backyard.

Jose Luis JimenezGUEST

Jose Luis JimenezGUEST

Deb RobertsHOST
27:45

Deb RobertsHOST
27:47

Deb RobertsHOST
27:51
Dengue, step aside.
Deb RobertsHOST
27:54
The mosquito-borne infection has prompted health officials to issue an advisory.
Jason GarciaHOST
15:48
This is not just a rural boundary in Orlando issue.
Jason GarciaHOST
15:52
So Another example, Suncoast Searchlight had a story a few weeks ago where James Uthmeyer sent a letter to Sarasota County telling them essentially that they had to allow developers to build large apartment complexes on rural land because of a 2023 law that has become like really sort of controversial across Florida known as the Live Local Act.
Jason GarciaHOST
16:13
It was designed to to spur the construction of more affordable housing.
Jason GarciaHOST
16:18
It has done that to some extent.
Jason GarciaHOST
16:20
It has also subsidized some luxury apartment development in a way that was probably not intended, but it also, the way it got there was stripping local governments of a lot of powers to sort of control some of these developments.
Jason GarciaHOST
16:31
And so Sarasota County had been taking the position that the Live Local Act did not apply to rural land.
Jason GarciaHOST
16:38
But James Uthmeyer is taking the position that because rural land allows some limited uses, commercial uses, like farming type stuff, and also because people can live on rural land, that qualifies it as mixed-use land.
Jason GarciaHOST
16:50
And so because of that, live local does apply, and that Sarasota County has to allow these developers to go forward with these, again, large apartment complexes.
EmmaHOST

Attendees enjoyed games, free lunch, and raffle prizes.
EmmaHOST
