A.M. Youngblood, a newspaper publisher and editor, hires Spade to locate Ray McCulley, the paper's leading crime reporter, who has vanished while pursuing its anti-racketeering campaign.

With the police kept out of the assignment, Spade follows McCulley's recent leads through newspaper and underworld circles in a script by Gil Dowd and Robert Tallman.
