Sanzen

A turning phrase is another name for a capping phrase that helps explain a koan.

Students will often present a capping phrase to their teacher in Sanzen about a koan to demonstrate their understanding.

The master statement, "They are not confused about cause and effect," is an unusual translation.

More common translations include Robert Aitken's translation, "Such person does not evade cause and effect," or does not deny cause and effect.
