Santa Gertrudis cattle

Actually, I said Kingsville.

That's where the King Ranch first settled in, I think, 1854. and they started breeding, uh, Santa Gertruda's cattle, flat, uh, grassland, you know, cactus, uh, mesquite, very different from the lush,

beautiful

hills of Ohio.

That was Uncle Ralphie.

Ralph went out to feed the cattle, and we had, uh, s- some Santa Gertrudis cows at that time, and a couple of them was pretty mean.

And so Ralphie-

They're a shorthorn base herd from the Grove shorthorns originally.

And we've, in the past 10 to 12 years, we've been buying Santa Gertrudis bulls to put over the shorthorns.

And we've seen them increase the growth of the cattle significantly with a bit of hybrid vigour, just having the 1 16th Brahman content, which helps during the dry times and with their browsing of the different species of grasses and Sometimes our short-ons will be very selective in their grazing pressures and when it dries out they seem to slip away pretty quickly.

We normally sell our weaners off the mothers if we're having a tight season but in the last five years we've had phenomenal seasons south of Tambor great grass season so we really need to knock back the grass for our sheep to get around and graze efficiently.

We've downsized to a farm in Jinjin, which is about 375 acres or 150 hectares.

And we're still running Santa Gertruda's cattle because we can't change the type of cattle.

We're still both heavily involved in the rangelands.
