Santa Fe Community College

[match being struck] [exhales] In August 1990, Gainesville was preparing for the beginning of another academic year.

Home to the University of Florida and Santa Fe Community College, it was the kind of place that runs on student life.

At the end of summer, cars arrived filled with boxes, clothes, and newly purchased furniture.

Parents helped their sons and daughters carry their belongings into the new halls and off-campus apartments.

And during those two days, their killer went looking for yet another victim, Christa Hoyt.

She was 18 years old.

She was bright, energetic, and interested in science, and she was preparing to study at the Santa Fe Community College.

She worked as a clerk in the records department of the local sheriff's office, and several days before the murders began, it was later found out that the killer had looked through Christa's bedroom window.

I'll, I ...

You're, you're describing the path to college for half of my friends that I grew up with, which is it either, you know, if they didn't get into where they wanted, you have s- you had Santa Fe Community College near Gainesville, Tallahassee Community College near Florida State, Miami Dade near both, you know, University of Miami, Florida International, FAU, all that.

And the, the, the, that, that's how they handled this, the community college system.

Yep.

I have no idea where Santa Fe is.

If my life depended on it, if there was a gun to my head and somebody said, Zaslow, tell me where Santa Fe Community College is right now or I pull the trigger and you die.

You see, you can't hear me anymore because I died.

I would not know where to go.

More- All right, so back up a little bit there.

So the, the next day from the, the very next day from those first two killings, Christa Hoyt is found, and this is the most disturbing murder because, um, she, she was at Santa Fe Community College.

She was the only of the five that are murdered, she was the only one not going to Florida.

She's going to Santa Fe Community College.

And she was beheaded, and the, the killer placed her head on a shelf so that when you walked in it was the first thing you saw.

So this is a sick, sick, awful person.
