So that was a nice little thing to get early on.

Then moved up and played at Sandgate where I lived for a year.

Then that club folded and ended up playing most of the rest of my juniors at Norse Devils, which was back then through the 80s and 90s was a pretty wild place.

Yes, that's for sure.

What was it like for a young boy from the north side of Brisbane heading down to the bright lights of Sydney and playing with such a big club at a time when they were putting their foot down?

Yeah, obviously it's a big change.

Sandgate and Redcliffe are pretty quiet, sleepy towns.

It was a great upbringing, but living in the eastern suburbs of Sydney, it's a whole different beast.

Jess is an AFL commentator for Triple M and Fox Footy, and two nights before we recorded this, she was on stage at the AFL Media Awards accepting the Clinton Gribus Award for the Best Emerging Talent.

Jess grew up in Brisbane with three older brothers, ran the scoreboard at Sandgate for a pie and a can of Coke, and did six weeks of TV internships out of uni before moving to Darwin to become a sports reporter for the NT News.

After five years in the Territory, Jess moved back to Brisbane without a job, but found her way into ABC Sport, where she met Quinton Hull, who showed her the ropes of calling football.

After doing her time in Brisbane, Jess then moved to Melbourne on nothing more than the signal of, if you're in Melbourne, then we might consider you.

We can do both.

Oh, I mean, when I was a kid, I grew up with three older brothers.

So my sports life started way back at the Sandgate Seahawks, actually, in Brizzy's North, operating the scoreboard.

So I used to get that for a pie and a can of Coke and love that job.
