When the Lemorn...
Jack MathewsGUEST
14:43
When the Lamorne was like, Samus, we have our memory fruit and we need you to find all the green crystals and fill it with the green crystal energy.
Jack MathewsGUEST
14:53
And I'm just like thinking like I'm the voice actor or whomever that's like, I just, I don't know.
Jack MathewsGUEST
15:00
It just felt like the most crazy thing.

Reece ReillyHOST
25:16
well the art team's always been killer at retro right like top of the line like i am because from what i understand from other retro studios devs that i've spoken to is nintendo is only really anal in regards to like the character art in terms of like specific specifically legacy characters right oh yeah yeah yeah but like with other stuff they largely are like okay You guys are pretty darn good.
Reece ReillyHOST
25:42
We don't need to give you heaps of direction.
Jack MathewsGUEST
25:45
Well, and also, you know, like when, when, when, when something is really obviously good, Japan's not going to just say, change this just because whatever, unless it's like Samus or something, you know? Um, so yeah, I mean like, I'm sure if retro had done a bad job on it, cause I'm, I, I would think that, needing to have NPCs that actually play along with you was likely a Tanabe directive.
Jack MathewsGUEST
26:19
Well, he's
July DiazHOST
18:34
So it's Mario, Pikachu, Dino.
July DiazHOST
18:40
Fox, Link, Samus,
Jeremy SchmidtHOST
18:46
Falcon.
July DiazHOST
18:47
Well, he's unlockable.
July DiazHOST
21:51
We already did Mario and Luigi.
July DiazHOST
21:52
Falcon
Jeremy SchmidtHOST
21:53
and Samus.
July DiazHOST
21:55
You don't consider Mario and Luigi people? They're different.
Hamish SteeleHOST
18:52
So the other bits of development information, I mean, we mentioned probably this in our Super Mario Land 2 episode, but Hiroji Kuretake was the designer of Wario.
Hamish SteeleHOST
19:07
He was also the designer of Samus and a few other characters here and there.
Hamish SteeleHOST
19:13
One of his earliest, he was the director of this game, but one of his earliest Nintendo roles was as a graphic designer on Wrecking Crew.
Hamish SteeleHOST
19:23
So he probably designed Foreman Spike, which could be seen as a Wario precursor.
Hamish SteeleHOST
19:48
I thought this was maybe a gaming kind of urban legend or something.
Hamish SteeleHOST
19:52
But, Velvet, you mentioned this on your stream.
Hamish SteeleHOST
19:55
and that is that the Nintendo R&D team felt a little annoyed that they kept having to work on like Mario games and they also did Return of Samus and like the spin-offs of the main series they couldn't create characters themselves and so Wario is basically the embodiment of disdain for Mario they like created him for Mario Brothers 2 and I would say in Mario Brothers 2 and Mario in Wario Land Mario's personality is like a little bit uh I would say jerkier like Even in Mario Land 2, in which you play as him, he has a whole island and castle and, like, theme park dedicated to himself.
Hamish SteeleHOST
20:47
And, like, he's a bit more of a brash kind of capitalist sort of...
Riley HopkinsHOST
11:11
printing update.
Riley HopkinsHOST
11:11
Are you Samus yet? Do you have the whole suit? No, I'm just printing that stuff, but I got deck boxes for my Magic the Gathering stuff, which I was like, oh, I can print that, which is great.
Riley HopkinsHOST
11:20
This is glow-in-the-dark filament, which is really cool.
Riley HopkinsHOST
11:22
Hey, Google.
KevinHOST
42:48
What do you want to bet? He's a big nerd boy.
FalconHOST
42:53
Samus just
KevinHOST
42:54
pushes him over.
KevinHOST
42:55
How many books do you think he carries? I bet a lot.
KevinHOST
42:57
Samus pushes
FalconHOST
42:58
him into a locker.
FalconHOST
42:59
Finds a locker just to push him into.
FalconHOST
44:58
You're all right.
MattHOST
72:33
Maybe it's just the era we're in, but I think it would be kind of neat to do a debut character one.
MattHOST
72:40
Like I said, I'm kind of sick of just seeing all the classics, like the Super Marios or the Samus or whatever, just those figures that are so iconic.
MattHOST
72:50
But now we're in a stage where you have all these cool, unique designs for characters that come about that...
MattHOST
72:57
Sometimes their game might not ever actually go anywhere, but you can kind of pull them out and ham-fist them into different things, you know, and sometimes you may see a beloved figure that their game itself doesn't carry weight, but maybe potentially they could live on in some other facet.
Roger DiLuigiHOST
10:22
But again, if he has a really cool trailer, I think it could be kind of cool.
Roger DiLuigiHOST
10:26
um i don't know i did also really like the new remake game that's coming out though for switch 2 of the old rayman game that was on wii u that one was kind of neat so i don't know maybe if he looks hand drawn that could be a kind of cool thing to implement rayman in there ichiban i think is a really good choice for a yakuza rep because obviously kiryu doesn't hit women i don't think sega would want to throw Kiryu in there punching Samus in the face.
Roger DiLuigiHOST
10:51
Ichiban wouldn't have a problem with it though.
Roger DiLuigiHOST
10:52
And Ichiban, even though the Like a Dragon games are not on Switch 2, is technically on Switch because he is playable in Sonic Racing Crossworld.
StanoHOST
57:23
That is almost like...
StanoHOST
57:26
Another one that we'll kind of talk about too was Jamie Arantes, right? Jamie was literally called Samus.
StanoHOST
57:36
Yes.
StanoHOST
57:36
Like, okay, come on.
StanoHOST
57:38
And the logo said that they were like a Metroid runner instead of a Metroid runner or whatever.
StanoHOST
57:46
And the logo was literally the logo from the Nintendo character game.
StanoHOST
57:50
Like they put just Samus in the game as a character and that is like, okay, come on.
StanoHOST
58:00
This is so on the nose.
Tim GettysHOST
86:57
How did a game look this beautiful? And it's art design, and it's care, and it's making this world so filled with character when there's so little characters in it.
Tim GettysHOST
87:07
Samus is dead silent, but when you shoot the blast and you see the reflection of her face in the visor, it's like...
Tim GettysHOST
87:14
Man, that is a moment that will be talked about forever for good reason.
Tim GettysHOST
87:18
It's the little things that add up to such a special experience.

32 MINS LATER

Tim GettysHOST
119:18
I think it was back on the DS.
Tim GettysHOST
119:20
And for it to be shelved forever, and it really feel like we were never going to get a 2D Metroid again.
Tim GettysHOST
119:26
for Mercury Steam to remake Metroid 2 with Samus Returns on the real tail end of the 3DS's life right after the Switch had already kind of started.
Tim GettysHOST
119:36
And I enjoyed that game quite a bit, but it always felt to me like a baby step.
ColeHOST
26:17
The other half of Metroidvania, Metroid...
QuinnHOST
26:20
Um, hey, yeah, I have been, the last time that we spoke, we talked about Metroid Samus Returns, and that we were going to start Super Metroid, because that's Metroid 2 and then Metroid 3.
QuinnHOST
26:32
We finished Super Metroid, and before anybody asks, yeah, we absolutely did save the animals.
QuinnHOST
26:37
That is an important phrase if you've played Metroid before, and if you haven't, then that sounds like, what the fuck are you on about?
QuinnHOST
26:51
Hey, so remember...
QuinnHOST
26:53
No, actually, we didn't talk about that.
QuinnHOST
26:55
At the end of a lot of Metroid games, Samus is on a space station or a planet and the shit fucking activates a self-destruct sequence and it explodes.
QuinnHOST
27:06
And hey, that happens here on this game.
