He says a Machshava actually means, uh, he's obviously controversial, but he says it actually means plan.

And so when you translate it that way and then together with the Chafetz Chaim saying that everyone has these thoughts which come up.

Is that correct? Why should there be a difference between Jews and non-Jews wanting that?

Rishm al-Dawla Zato's introduction to the Mahzor of Rome is really an introduction to what the Mahzor is, how the Mahzor works.

So those who are interested really in a study of the Mahzor and the background of the Mahzor, which essentially my first, you know, 10 chapters or so working through the origin and development of the Mahzor benefited tremendously from Shadal's work and the Mavut to the Mahzor of Rome.

Yeah, that's one of, you know, he's known for many things, but that maybe is one of his most impressive works for those, for like the general public to sit and read, just that it was printed in the Livorno-Machzer.

It was redone by Goldschmidt.

It's available, the new print with notes.

Really, it's an easy read.

Shadal's Hebrew is wonderful.

So, I mean, some don't want to read Shadal, but yeah, you must read it.

And I'll read the English, which is a good translation of the Aramaic here.

The prophet said to the house of David, so Isaiah 9.5 and Hebrew 9.6 in English, the prophet said to the house of David, for unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given, and he has taken the law from himself to keep it.

His name is called from before him who is wonderful in counsel, the mighty God who lives to eternity, the Messiah whose peace shall be great upon us in his days.

So the Targum understands this as being messianic, as do some other rabbinic commentaries.

What can I say? It's a stretch.

It hardly works.

In fact, it goes back to Shaddal in the 1800s, Rabbi Shmuel David Luzzatto, one of the great Italian rabbis of his day, probably the greatest of his day.

And he proposes it.
