Mark HoffmeyerHOST
2:06
He was the assistant director trainee on this.
Mark HoffmeyerHOST
2:09
Sam Ohung did special action choreography.
Mark HoffmeyerHOST
2:13
So it's just an absurdly stacked...
Mark HoffmeyerHOST
2:16
And, you know...
Dave ParkerHOST
19:13
And this one is, Where is Officer Tuba? What a bizarre title here, starring the legendary Sammo Hong.
Dave ParkerHOST
19:20
one of my favorites, I think everybody, this also has David Chang in it, and it's weird, because I don't know if I've ever seen off the top of my head, I've seen a couple, but they're still Shaw Brothers flicks, maybe, actually, World War II style, I'm getting out of time right here, but I don't know if I've seen too many David Chang movies where he's in a contemporary modern role, I've seen World War II kind of set piece ones, or after that, but, and also, like, I've seen, of course, all the period piece Shaw Brothers movies, but David Chang is a Shaw staple so him being in this is really weird he's kind of a super cop but the plot is uh a super bizarre one here uh sammo hung is a lonely guy who works at the police and he basically just plays the tuba in the bands and stuff like that most of the time he just kind of meanders and wanders around this store that's by his house and he kind of like sheepishly like kind of looks at you know pretty girls and talks to the people that work there and he ends up kind of falling for this girl that started being like a manager there and there seems to be an attraction from her part as well And basically what happens is he lives with kind of a guy who wants to be a really badass cop, but he's put behind an office job.
Dave ParkerHOST
20:21
And essentially David Chang is a super cop.
Dave ParkerHOST
20:24
So one day David Chang's like, we got to kind of get into this drug deal and figure out what's going on, but we need somebody to go undercover.
Dave ParkerHOST
20:40
Of course, comedy ensues, but also you know what else ensues? A brutal murder of David Chang.
Dave ParkerHOST
20:45
And this is one of the movies where we'll be laughing jokes here, very Hong Kong-like, and then when somebody gets shot, they waste them.
Dave ParkerHOST
20:51
their kneecaps are blown out they're screaming on the ground dying and then there's a joke later it's just the kind of style of humor and everything of that nature but of course um when he's dying he makes sammo hung promise him you'll get revenge you'll take revenge for me and there's a really great bit here where david chang is like closes his eyes and sammo hung is like nodding at first and he closes his eyes to do this and then david chang wakes back up when he's dead and he's like and it's just a funny funny little gag there got me laughing sammo hung's faces are great here But anyways, he agrees.
Dave ParkerHOST
21:16
And then Sammo Hung kind of moves forward with that relationship.
JoshHOST
24:23
Which I already knew that was going to be good because I saw the first one.
JoshHOST
24:26
And Sammo Hong is fucking amazing at doing comedy horror.
JoshHOST
24:30
But this one... sequel's pretty fucking great too
JesseHOST
24:34
Yeah, I've been actually pretty lucky.
TrevorHOST
63:22
um and that kind of ends up bringing us in a strange way to the director who's andrew lau uh who is so so prolific it's kind of crazy to think that the director of the park a movie that is like just a rip-off very much of j-horror like this if you had no idea you would just think this is a run-of-the-mill director in my opinion like watching this i just think it was like whatever but andrew lau is like so prolific as a director and cinematographer in Hong Kong.
TrevorHOST
63:50
He started his career in the 80s doing cinematography work for a lot of genre cinema, stuff like Sammo Hung would produce along the lines of Mr. Vampire 1 through 3, Millionaire's Express.
TrevorHOST
64:04
I think that was in 1986.
TrevorHOST
64:07
And then also in 1986, there's Where's Officer Tuba? And then also in 1987, he worked on the gritty crime thriller City on Fire from Ringo Lam.
Justin DeclouxHOST
58:48
Looks a little old, but he is, so he should look old.
Justin DeclouxHOST
58:52
Sammo Hung looks good.
Justin DeclouxHOST
58:53
That's right.
Justin DeclouxHOST
58:53
I mean, he looks like Sammo Hung.
Justin DeclouxHOST
58:55
Yeah, he looks like Sammo Hung.
Justin DeclouxHOST
58:56
He was older.
Justin DeclouxHOST
58:57
Alien.
LawsonHOST
5:54
Which is very good, too.
Alex ChungGUEST
5:56
Are any of these Jackie or Sammo?
LawsonHOST
5:59
Yes.
LawsonHOST
6:03
You know what's funny? Oh, you know what I just realized? None of these are Sammo.
Jay HuertoGUEST
6:07
None of them are Sammo.
LawsonHOST
6:08
None of them are Sammo.
LawsonHOST
6:09
I'd like them, but I
Jay HuertoGUEST
6:10
don't have any favorite fights from Sammo.
Michael KeeneGUEST
10:59
It has all the money in the world on its side.
Michael KeeneGUEST
11:02
You can hire whatever our equivalent to Sammo Hung is right now to choreograph your fight scenes and make them more exciting and more fun.
Kris MayeshiroGUEST
11:12
I mean, even if they got, uh, Brett Chan who, who did all the choreography for warrior.
Kris MayeshiroGUEST
11:17
I mean, he does such a good job with that.

11 MINS LATER

Steven HughesGUEST
22:08
yeah like there's he's got a sequel to shaolin soccer coming out uh called kung fu soccer nice so yeah yeah that's gonna rule steven chow definitely influenced this movie let's go
David RosenHOST
22:19
to michael for one more
Michael KeeneGUEST
22:21
I was going to bring up an old Sammo Hung movie that's a trilogy where they cannot manage the balance between humor and awesome fight sequences.
Michael KeeneGUEST
22:33
But I can't remember the name.
SamHOST
2:32
it was in the same conversation as Boxer's Omen and, uh, spoo- uh, what's that? The spooky...
SamHOST
2:39
What's that spooky movie? The Sammo Hung one.
RachelPANELIST
2:41
The spooky movie.
RachelPANELIST
2:42
[laughs]
RachelPANELIST
7:23
Oh, yeah, who's always laughing?
SamHOST
7:24
Yeah.
SamHOST
7:25
Or in the Sammo Hung film, um, Eastern Condors.
RachelPANELIST
7:28
Mm.
EricHOST
51:31
Man, it was a heyday for Italian horror movies.
EricHOST
51:33
[chuckles] This, Encounters of the Spooky Kind, which is a kung fu zombie movie directed by Sammo Hung.
EricHOST
51:41
The Erotic Nights of the Living Dead.
EricHOST
51:43
More on the mainstream side, The Fog, Friday the 13th, The Hearse, Hell of the Living Dead, a Bruno Mattei film.
Kim LoweHOST
16:44
Yeah, well, it also helps that it is coordinated by Jackie Chan's stunt team, so it's...
Edward JonesHOST
16:52
that does help and it's only when you look at the the way that these fight scenes are constructed though i was like going back and forth i was like trying to like figure out where the influence is coming and it definitely is that jackie chan sort of style i think it leans more into like somehow hung than um jackie chan mini because it hasn't got the sort of so strongly with the comedy elements but it's also using the environment it's sort of like okay i've got this and this thing and then i can use it as a weapon against this person and it's about using the environment to create a flow which you don't see in like a jet lee or a donnie yen which is just more just about the straightforward brutality against the person with the jackie chan somehow it's more about how can i incorporate the environment and what can we flow we can get from this and Obviously Jackie Chan's got a more comedic side and Sammo Hung was always kind of like, especially in the early films, he's more like the fish out of water element.
Edward JonesHOST
17:49
He's sort of like the guy who shouldn't be as capable as he is.
Edward JonesHOST
17:52
So he's always got like a more sort of frantic sort of energy to it until he gets like the big fights and then suddenly becomes a martial arts expert.

26 MINS LATER

Edward JonesHOST
44:07
It's sort of like Jackie Chan.
Edward JonesHOST
44:10
I don't think Jackie Chan's really willing to be the person to bring this in.
Edward JonesHOST
44:13
Sammo Hung.
Edward JonesHOST
44:15
