Gertrude Leggett turns to San Francisco private detective Sam Spade when her stepdaughter, Gabrielle, disappears after her father's funeral.

Gabrielle had said she was going to the family's country place at Quesada, but never arrived.

As Spade follows the Leggett trail, a prominent writer of murder mysteries and his newly published crime novel become part of the inquiry.
