They officially became Australian citizens, a milestone many celebrated with family, friends and loved ones.

But for 27 new citizens on the New South Wales South Coast, the occasion was extra special, with the Governor-General herself officially welcoming them as Australians.

Our reporter Jacinta Coonahan was there and has this story.

Held in the Yerba Dela Botanical Gardens on the New South Wales South Coast, 27 people from 14 different countries today made their pledge to become an Australian citizen.

Following a welcome to country, people from all walks of life were officially welcomed to Australia by the Governor-General, Sam Mostyn.

The Australian bravery decorations for only the second time were announced on Wattle Day.

The 25th anniversary of the bravery garden in the grounds of Government House was celebrated and the Australians missing and dead in the flash floods in Nepal were remembered.

During the ceremony yesterday, Governor-General Sam Mostyn evoked the memory of then Governor General Sir William Dean when in 1999 he dropped sprigs of wattle into the Saxaton River in Switzerland to remember the 14 Australian victims of the Interlaken canyoning disaster.

Ms Mostyn said she could envisage doing something similar in Nepal at the appropriate time.

I'd like to think today that when we look at our we think of the fact that there has been a loss of life in another part of the world, far flung from here where Australians have been hurt, she said.

And I want to congratulate those who are being recognised on this Wattle Day because the Governor-General Sam Mostyn has approved 30 bravery decorations for 54 Australians, including two bravery medals, 22 commendations for brave conduct and six group bravery citations.

It's a wonderful recognition for those who chose danger over safety for the sake of others, including Todd Sellers, who back in 2017, remember the seaplane that crashed on the Hawkesbury River? Well, Todd put his own life at risk to jump into the water and try and rescue those people who perished in the crash.

And he's being recognised today and rewarded with a bravery citation.
