Chris HewittHOST
Jessica Biel also stars as Amy, Sean's childhood crush, who is now a sensationally good driver.
Chris HewittHOST
I wonder if those skills will come in handy in this film directed by Extraction's Sam Hargrave.
Chris HewittHOST
Hmm, we shall see.
Chris HewittHOST
Cena and Biel came into the Empire pod booth yesterday.
15 MINS LATER
Jessica BielGUEST
Yeah.
John CenaGUEST
You know? Like, uh, it's, I just gotta know where I'm going.
Chris HewittHOST
So when Sam Hargrave then pitched this, this movie to you, were there s- h- did he lay out sequences that are in the movie that kinda clinched the deal for you? 'Cause-
John CenaGUEST
Sam, Sam Hargrave r- reminds me a lot of James Gunn in preparation-
Tony JacksonHOST
Look, it's all forgettable, and a waste of a Marvel movie-sized budget.
Tony JacksonHOST
But at least on the big screen, the big set pieces from director Sam Hargrave, stunt coordinator for Infinity War and Endgame, and director of both Extraction flicks for Netflix, could get the presentation everyone's hard work deserves.
Tony JacksonHOST
Nothing's ever gonna take your breath away on a 55-inch screen, though.
Tony JacksonHOST
Matchbox the movie centers on middle school friends in a small Ohio town who call themselves the Matchbox Gang.
Greg SwinehartGUEST
It's more like before we record, I realize, oh my gosh, this guy worked on these other hilariously ridiculous but also so enjoyable movies for me.
Greg SwinehartGUEST
There's a guy named Brad Martin who's done a lot There's a guy named Sam Hargrave who has done a lot and he's actually kind of a director in his own right now.
Greg SwinehartGUEST
He comes from, we're going to go, are you ready to go deep? Is this happening? He, he comes from kind of a David Leitch school, David Leitch and Chad Stahelski directed, co-directed John Wick, which is a great bad movie, a great ridiculous.
Greg SwinehartGUEST
And, you know, it's, it's a movie that a few people saw.
Greg SwinehartGUEST
And then for the next year, You're out with friends and somebody says, have you seen that? That was better than I thought it was going to be.
Greg SwinehartGUEST
There's something about it.
Greg SwinehartGUEST
So Sam Hargrave and David Leitch, they worked together on a lot of the Marvel movies early on, kind of those crazy stunt sequences in those movies.
Greg SwinehartGUEST
Some of the Bourne kind of identity, Bourne supremacy, ultimatum.
Skyler ShulerHOST
Um, Fire TV, like one of the most stable TVs you can get, was not stable for me, so I'm gonna watch it tonight.
Skyler ShulerHOST
Um, and I'm excited for Matchbox because I love the Extraction movies, and it's directed by Sam Hargrave, who does those Extraction movies.
Skyler ShulerHOST
Um, so I'm gonna give it a chance tonight so I c- maybe we can talk about it next week.
Skyler ShulerHOST
Um, fingers crossed that's good.
Joshua HunterHOST
Like, there is a globe-trotting aspect to this that is actually pretty, that is actually pretty fun.
Joshua HunterHOST
And because you get a director, um, in, uh, in Sam Hargrave who went ahead and directed, uh, the first two Extraction films, which, you know, those are pretty fucking good, um, you get some good hand-to-hand here.
Joshua HunterHOST
And I think Cena, there are some points where you can definitely tell it's a stunt man, but Cena looks like he's putting in a lot of work in these action scenes.
Joshua HunterHOST
Like, it, it really is a pretty fucking good showcase for Cena.
JohnHOST
was very yeah
JayHOST
but you know as a kid it was exciting um yeah no this movie released october 9 2026 so just a couple days ago and it's directed by sam hargrave who is a stunt coordinator or stunt performer um but is probably most well known as the director of netflix's extraction movies the um with chris hemsworth their action yeah there's a couple of them and i think a third one on the way um this is written by david coggis hall or Cogsall, I don't know how to pronounce it, who also wrote The Family Plan and Orphan First Kill, The Family Plan being another action-y type in the same vein, streaming action movie.
JayHOST
Then we have Cinematography by someone whose name that I didn't write down because that was very smart of me.
JayHOST
A
James DyerHOST
Set it on fire.
Helen O'HaraHOST
Uh, look, look, let me, let me say the good stuff first, okay? This is directed by Sam Hargrave, who did Extraction with, with Chris Hemsworth.
Helen O'HaraHOST
I like him.
Helen O'HaraHOST
He's a, he's a, he's a fun guy.
Helen O'HaraHOST
[laughs] I, I just, I d- Like it j- it just, it didn't work for me on any kind of level.
Helen O'HaraHOST
I, I, like I say, I actually like-
Chris HewittHOST
What about the action level? Sam Hargrave, director, Extraction, Extraction 2-
Helen O'HaraHOST
Yeah
Brett ArnoldHOST
And then because that uncle guy dies at an off moment for his career, he is able to go home and drag all of his childhood friends into, like, an action movie essentially, which, like, leads to some fun set pieces with, like, civilians doing, you know, piloting an aircraft or driving a crazy car, which kind of...
Brett ArnoldHOST
I- you know, the action s- kind of works in this more than it- you'd expect it to from a streaming mockbuster because they got Sam Hargrave, the guy who does the Netflix Chris Hemsworth, uh, action movies, Extraction, to do this.
Brett ArnoldHOST
So the action kinda pops, I thought, but it's not enough [laughs] to, like, make this movie worthwhile.
Brett ArnoldHOST
But, like, the way in which it drops the Matchbox stuff immediately does ma- did make me laugh pretty hard.
Kellyanne HalversonGUEST
oh duh
Rachel WagnerHOST
there we go so that is our question of the week all right next up we have matchbox the movie this is after hostiles abduct former soldier sean walker to locate a nuclear warhead the ci suspects his involvement later walker and his allies plot to reclaim the bomb and clear their names director sam hargrave Stars John Cena and Jessica Biel.
Rachel WagnerHOST
So this.
Rachel WagnerHOST
If somebody were telling me.
David O'CallaghanHOST
John Cena plays an undercover CIA agent trying to save the world with the help of his childhood friends in this basically straight-to-VHS movie based on the Mattel toy franchise.
David O'CallaghanHOST
Joining him [laughs] on this extremely sketchy misadventure are Jessica Biel, Sam Richardson, and Arturo Castro, and it comes from the stuntman-turned-director Sam Hargrave, who, in fairness, made the very successful Extraction, so at least we know the action scenes will be class, even if the plot and Matchbox connection is the most paper of thin.
David O'CallaghanHOST
Oh my God.
David O'CallaghanHOST
Leave the brain firmly behind the sofa and embrace the novelty of it all.
