Now, here are five quick things to know about Eugene Delacroix.

Number one, his first major painting at the Paris Salon was actually a huge scandal.

In 1822, Delacroix submitted his first major work, The Bark of Dante, to the prestigious Paris Salon, the official state-sponsored art exhibition that would make or break an artist's career.

The painting depicts a scene from Dante's Inferno, showing Dante and the poet Virgil crossing the river Styx as the tormented souls of the damned cling to their boat.

The scene is dark, chaotic, and filled with raw terror and desperation.
