I think with Western monasticism, it is often tied to a particular work.

Where I went to seminary, the Benedictines there run St. Vincent College, St. Vincent Seminary, you know they run half of the parishes within the diocese of greensburg where monks will live in the rectory rather than in the monastery And there are 200 monks in the monastery too.

And so the vision of the Eastern monastics is that you fulfill your obedience given by the abbot, your work for the monastery on a given day, but there's not this external work where there's this constant engagement of those within the world that then the rest of the day is given over to spiritual reading silence all of one's work is done in silence and then one is able to keep vigils to rise during the night So, you know, I knew monks who were walking around Bleriot because they were working 16, 18 hours a day, you know, teaching in the seminary as well as trying to follow the monastic rule.
