then I got the opportunity to go train with Tony in Montreal and in West Point New York which was awesome is like 12 days of training crazy that my department approved that and paid for it but it was cool and then that was indispensable and in my evolution as a martial artist and a police officer And then I actually brought Tony to Safford.

That was a big seminar.

I put a bunch of grants together and flew him down and put him up in a hotel and paid him, and that was awesome too.

you've experienced the thriving metropolis of Safford,

What's the one that's like the twin cities? Like they're right next to each other.

And like, there's a very noticeable drop off between.

And my wife and I both had the same epiphany that we were supposed to do it.

I was dead set against it, my wife was dead set against it, so we moved back to Safford, Arizona, where both my wife and I are from, and I ran for sheriff, and miraculously was elected in 1988-

Mm-hmm

... and reelected in 1992, and then in 1994, became the first sheriff in American history to launch a major lawsuit against the federal government, and, uh, the rest is history.

So were you stationary when your kids were younger?

Yeah, I, I practiced 23 years in the same practice in the same small community in Arizona, Safford, Arizona.

He was coaching me up as a defensive back.

So he was the special teams coordinator as well for the EAC Gila Monsters in Thatcher in Safford, Arizona.

A beautiful, a glorious place to live for a year or so.
