Sabbath School

This week's Sabbath School lesson is consummately ironic.

After last week's lesson, which used Hebrews 1:1-2 as the week's memory verse, a passage declaring that in the past, God spoke to his people, the fathers, through prophets in many portions and in many ways, but in these last days, he has spoken to us in his Son, this week's entire lesson is spent creating an argument for defending Ellen White as a non-canonical prophet, using the same explanations for her as they use to defend the biblical men Abraham, Elijah, Isaiah, Daniel, and John the Baptist.

Besides displaying a profound lack of understanding that these last days belong to a completely new covenant, different from the times past, a covenant based on a completely new and different priesthood and law, the authors see no problem with selecting a 19th century woman who happened to endorse visionary revelations of novel doctrines and scriptural interpretations, and then proceeding to equate her with the prophets God sent to Israel.

By what objective criteria can they defend Ellen White as authentic while judging Joseph Smith, Helena Blavatsky, Charles Taze Russell, Mary Baker Eddy, and any number of others who claimed visions from God? This lesson is pure eisegesis, or one might even say it's an example of cultic indoctrination.

We're grateful also to have not just you with us, but one of the authors and the editor of this quarter's Sabbath School lesson with us, and that is Pastor Dwayne Esmond.

Pastor Dwayne is a published author.

He is an accomplished speaker.

Even among progressive evangelical Adventists, scriptural interpretation cannot deviate from the worldview established by Ellen White's visions.

This new quarter's Sabbath School lessons, which are written by the White estate, are dedicated to solidifying Adventists' belief and faith in Ellen's inspiration and in her role as a supposedly God-given gift to modern man.

We're so glad that you're studying God's Word with us.

And we've thought about what are some markers or principles of great Christian leadership like serving, does this person look more like Christ? Is there authentic viability in the scripture, the truth of confirmation? Are you bringing your Bible? These are all great things.

So I hope you enjoyed this study.

But now I want you to think about our future, actually, as a ministry here, our Sabbath school lesson.

I'd like to continue reaching a broader audience as we think about the future of this program online.

If God is wrong, an organization can justify almost any perversion of reality that promotes their internal agenda.

In Lesson 13 of this third quarter of Sabbath School Lessons, the author once again exhorts its readers to practice love, grace, and fellowship.

Yet this exhortation is meaningless apart from understanding that God is not physical and that God is one.
