Jay WigleyGUEST
23:19
Well, I began to want to figure out, well, how do those games work? This, again, was the physics part of me, I think, coming back into play.
Jay WigleyGUEST
23:28
Um, how do those games work? And how do I know that this is, g- getting back to your concern that you expressed earlier in this discussion, how do I know that when I roll a 10 that that's what, quote-unquote, "would've really happened" with Cedeño at the plate? How do I know if this fielder had a great range or an average range or a poor range, for example, or a strong arm or a weak arm as an outfielder? Um, so wanting to quantify a player so that I could relax when I played those games and believe that what I was seeing was as likely as an actual historic, you know, a game that actually occurred in history, that was the other part that drove me to really want to dig into the play-by-play of a game because it's, it's when those events happen and you see what happens when the ball is hit towards Ryne Sandberg in second base, um- You know he's likely to reach the ball or he's likely to be able to make the play and, and put the batter out at first because you've studied the games that he played in, you've done the probability, you've run the statistics, and you can create a card that accurately represents Sandberg in that game, for example.
Jay WigleyGUEST
24:56
I think those two aspects of what you can gather from a large amount of play-by-play is what really drives me still, um, an ache to know and a desire for accuracy, uh, in our understanding of even the most obscure players, uh, from baseball's past.
Ewan SpenceHOST
25:17
So how much volunteering would you say you've done for Retrosheet?
Dan BernsteinHOST
57:48
He said, "I enjoyed listening to your Ditka tribute on Friday.
Dan BernsteinHOST
57:51
I attended the Cubs-Cardinals game at Busch Stadium last year shortly after Ryne Sandberg passed away.
Dan BernsteinHOST
57:56
The Cardinals not only acknowledged his passing during the inning breaks, but they also played a video tribute that included footage of the iconic '84 Sandberg game against St. Louis."
Matt AbbatacolaHOST
58:07
Hmm.
Jackson CockayneGUEST
16:57
Yeah.
James BeckettHOST
16:58
Then you go a little bit farther to the right, and that's the minor league pre-rookie card of Ryne Sandberg.
James BeckettHOST
17:06
And then the next one over is the green PMG of Barry Sanders.
Jackson CockayneGUEST
17:14
Yeah.
Paul PabstHOST
24:18
... and the greatest athlete.
Paul PabstHOST
24:18
'Cause, like, the greatest Cub of all time, or of recent time, might be M- Ryne Sandberg.
Paul PabstHOST
24:23
But Anthony Rizzo walks on water in that town.
Andrew PerloffHOST
24:26
What about Sosa?
Shaun O'HaraGUEST
8:40
So when I was a young boy, I was born in Chicago, so I kind of grew up a Cubs fan.
Shaun O'HaraGUEST
8:45
Um, I loved Ryne Sandberg and, um, you know, Shawon Dunston.
Shaun O'HaraGUEST
8:51
Um, you know, I, I was, I was a big Cubs fan.
Shaun O'HaraGUEST
8:55
Um, but I was a huge '86 Mets fan.
Frank BoalGUEST
18:14
Okay, it was '81.
Frank BoalGUEST
18:15
I always think Ryne Sandberg and Frank's first year in Kansas City.
Soren PetroHOST
18:17
Yeah, right, exactly.
Soren PetroHOST
18:18
[laughs]
Joey ChristopoulosHOST
62:56
And to be very fair, at the time, my list included Girardi.
Joey ChristopoulosHOST
63:00
My list included Ryne Sandberg.
Joey ChristopoulosHOST
63:02
Um, it included a couple of other names or whatever.
Joey ChristopoulosHOST
63:06
But honestly, even back to those Tampa Bay days, just Joe Maddon was one of my favorite listens, like, one-
Soren PetroHOST
18:38
I don't like him as much as the Royals do.
Soren PetroHOST
18:40
The Royals, when I hear J.J. Piccolo talk about Michael Massey, I mean, I, I think they almost view him as Ryne Sandberg or something.
Soren PetroHOST
18:49
Like, he has power, yes, but he, he has not been able...
Soren PetroHOST
18:53
Like, like, what do you think...
Tony KubekSOUNDBITE_SPEAKER
4:10
He can cover a lot of ground, great throwing arm, beginning to hit.
Tony KubekSOUNDBITE_SPEAKER
4:14
Sandberg, who plays it all around like he does.
Tony KubekSOUNDBITE_SPEAKER
4:16
Durham, much improved at first base.
Tony KubekSOUNDBITE_SPEAKER
4:18
Keith Morton, very steady, although he's got a little shoulder problem at third base.

Bob CostasSOUNDBITE_SPEAKER

And that's an automatic.
Bob CostasSOUNDBITE_SPEAKER
9:56
Could be two, though it slowly hits.
Bob CostasSOUNDBITE_SPEAKER
9:58
Sandberg gets one to Dunstan, and that's all.
Tony KubekSOUNDBITE_SPEAKER
10:01
Awfully tough ballpark to get a double play on, and those two guys in the middle of the diamond can really turn it, but it is such tall grass that the ball just dies once it hits the grass.
Chris WheelerHOST
3:09
They left it down at the front desk, and I had every intention of doing it.
Chris WheelerHOST
3:12
There's Ryne Sandberg, except I lost it at some point today.
Chris WheelerHOST
3:16
So those kids that gave me that birthday, we'll catch you again in the parking lot, and, uh, let me have it again, and we'll do it some other time.
Andy MusserHOST
3:24
Well, we would like to wish happy 62nd birthday to Bob Wallach from York, Pennsylvania.
Andy MusserHOST
5:08
Oh, yeah.
Andy MusserHOST
5:10
Martinez has stolen nine bases, been caught five times.
Andy MusserHOST
5:13
Here's Ryne Sandberg hitting at .310.
Andy MusserHOST
5:15
He carries the eighth top average in the NL.
