Ryan Clanton

I think when you talk about the breakdown in terms of the depth chart on the O-line where it's like you've got your starters, then you've got the next group, then you've got the depth.

I know that when you talk to Ryan Clanton during preseason camp, he gave you those 10 names of the guys that were, quote, trusted.

And I think we saw that bear out with the way that they use those offensive linemen on Saturday.

Because those first eight drives were the top five that we talked about.

they come in with the pedigree.

Ryan Clanton at least has proven that he is a capable offensive line coach, that he can send guys to the NFL, okay, to be determined as far as first-round picks, second-round picks on a consistent basis like that.

But you've got to look at the statistics.

And offensive line or run production, because Ryan Clanton plays a big part in – the ground game run game coordinator, right? They have improved at a serious clip when they were at Iowa state jumping up.

I think it was over 30 yards per game.

And I might be low balling that because I don't know it off the top of my head, but there was a significant increase in running rush yards per game when Clanton took over as the offensive line coach.

And he looks like he can still continue to grow, continue to put some to fill out that frame.

You know, we know that Ryan Clanton talked about the background with his dad as a professional fighter, you know, and that's something that has been instilled in him and that mindset.

I think that he's someone that could be really fun to watch.

Even if for this season, if all things go well in Big Ten play, maybe it's only a handful of snaps.

So the depth is a little bit shallow for a Pence for Penn state standards, but it's better than what it is for Iowa state standards of what Matt Campbell is used to.

And the point with Taylor Mouser and bringing Ryan Clanton, you didn't, you didn't mention Ryan Clanton.

So I'm going to mention, mention his name.

Just, I just think the philosophy and what he's preaching and the way he talks.

Offensive line.

Last year's offensive line on paper, more talented, and there's still some question marks.

How's Malachi Goodman going to do? So Ryan Clanton with last year's group, right? And I still think Phil Troutwine was a pretty good offensive line coach with how many people he sent to the NFL, but...

Venga you want a and you have Anthony Donko assuming he's healthy right drew Shelton, what was pretty good.

Is it going to be Owen Alcina or Garrett Sexton when you need another tackle involved? And we will see those six and seven offensive line sets.

So maybe that'll give us an early indication, probably week one, on where some guys are in terms of the grand scheme for Taylor Mouser and offensive line coach Ryan Clanton.

And, you know, Taylor Mouser, you know, when he spoke on Monday, you know, 'cause i- the big thing that we've heard throughout camp is the whole notion of, you know, iron sharpens iron.

You know, last week, Ryan Clanton said that his group on the offensive line is made better by the fact that Penn State finally has some 300-pound defensive tackles on the other side.

Yep.

And, you know, those guys push each other.

He has gotten some reps. Owen Alcine, who was an observer today during practice but has been a full participant in our previous watches, he's also made a run for it with the tackle position.

And so I think there's been so much movement, but you're getting to the point of preseason camp where, and maybe if they had gone to 11 on 11 football, Clanton would have again kind of been rolling the wheel and pointing guys in different directions.

And we would have had a kind of a whole hodgepodge of mixes there.

But I think you are to the point where you got to hone in and be like, this is our five that we're generally going to be out of a home base with.

And he's going to be a valuable piece on special teams again.

But today the number two center was Will Tompkins.

And as I mentioned before, This is a guy that Clanton really feels like is on the come up over the course of preseason camp.

Could contribute at guard, could contribute at center if they need it.

They have certain tenets that are super important to them that they're not comfortable straying from.

you know, and I think culture, you know, just around the room, around the program is something that we keep hearing, you know, day in, day out, regardless of who you're talking to, whether it's Matt Campbell, whether it's Taylor Mouser, Ryan Clanton, whomever it might be.

And I think that that's something that these players have internalized.

And that I think to me is one of the things that, you know, has stood out more than almost anything else is, you know, for as much as we might ask these guys about scheme or athletic traits or whatever, all these guys default back to, and the longest answers they give invariably are about how good their teammates are, you know, as people, how good they are as teammates, their selflessness.

I think that's one thing that people were confident about going in.

And again, Kashif Moore yesterday said, listen, going up against these defensive backs that Terry Smith and Danton Lynn and everyone else are coaching up has made his wide receiver group better.

Ryan Clanton said the same thing about the offensive line with going up against the defensive line.

And so I think with the defense being where it is, that's forced the offense to raise its game that much more.
