Ruth Harrison

Right, which all kind of culminated in 1964, didn't it?

Yes, with the publication of a book called Animal Machines by Ruth Harrison.

And this is where the story gets deeply, deeply embarrassing for the scientific establishment.

It really does.

Because Ruth Harrison was not a veterinary scientist.

She was a Quaker, a former conscientious objector, and basically a general member of the public who wrote a scathing expose on factory farming.

And it was a commercial book.
