Rutan Hill

Hidden under a hill in Sussex County lies the ancient Beamerville volcano, which erupted around 420 million years ago.

Known as Rutan Hill, it is the only volcanic structure remaining in New Jersey.

Although classified as extinct, the site offers a glimpse into the region's unique geologic history.

While the public cannot access the area, the volcanic neck remains a point of interest and a reminder of the state's dynamic past.
