his whole thing was you know I literally wrote the book on how much of an arsehole I was yeah I spent a lot of time with him and he's a fucking prick it's great that De Niro is just like he's a fucking arsehole I'm glad he agreed to let me spend time with him and get to know him and bits like that and he does have some good qualities but not many
IanHOST
51:49
fair but yeah great film and then King of Comedy which I've seen a few times and I always forget There are moments in this film where Pupkin kind of knows what he is in moments.
IanHOST
52:08
It's like... there's the occasional look or thing that he'll say that it's like, is reality actually going to break through for him? And, and it doesn't.
IanHOST
52:25
And I also, I do think it's interesting.
IanHOST
53:03
And I love the ending as well.
IanHOST
53:05
Like...
IanHOST
53:08
so like the end of the film he's like he's jailed but then he releases a book and he kind of becomes famous and then it ends with him on a stage and an announcer saying like you know everybody please welcome back Rupert Pupkin and then people just clapping and he's just standing there kind of like acknowledging people but not saying anything and then it cuts and I was just like thinking like Did he basically just write a five-minute stand-up set and that's all he had? And now he doesn't have anything left to say? What is that ending? Because on the face of it, it kind of feels like he won.
IanHOST
53:54
But I don't think it is that.
Emil AmosHOST
38:21
So I spent all this time looking in the magazines, thinking about, like, this red carpet in heaven.
Emil AmosHOST
38:29
Or probably even, like, as a nine-year-old, I think I was already, like, on imaginary talk shows like fucking Rupert Pupkin.
Emil AmosHOST
38:36
Yeah, totally.
Emil AmosHOST
38:37
In The King of Comedy.
Mike The FabHOST
79:08
A couple of other things that popped into my mind are number one, big recency bias opportunity here.
Mike The FabHOST
79:13
But we just watched the King of Comedy last week, and Rupert Pupkin is obviously a character who has a very high time preference.
Mike The FabHOST
79:19
He does not want to do the work.
Mike The FabHOST
79:21
He doesn't want to practice stand up.
Stavros HalkiasGUEST
16:53
I mean, what is Kill Tony if not this m-
Griffin NewmanHOST
16:55
The Rupert Pupkin marathon
Stavros HalkiasGUEST
16:56
... yeah, every, uh, a 10,000 Rupert Pupkins.
Griffin NewmanHOST
16:59
Yeah.
Stavros HalkiasGUEST
16:59
[laughs] You know? It's like that's a great point.
Stavros HalkiasGUEST
19:25
Yeah, it's f- anyway, that's a whole different conversation.
Stavros HalkiasGUEST
19:27
But, so I watch this movie out of context, no idea for who Scorsese is, whatever.
Stavros HalkiasGUEST
19:33
Um, and I'm also, I, uh, basically am Rupert Pupkin when I watch this movie, 'cause I'm 19, about to start doing open mics, and I have this delusion of like, "I'm the fucking man." I haven't done dick, right? I'm fucking, I'm just like, I've never accomplished anything creatively, right? [laughs] I did an open mic at my dorm.
TroyHOST
46:09
And he had not fully recovered when shooting on The King of Comedy began.
TroyHOST
46:14
The sequence in which Rupert unexpectedly arrives at Langford's country home is was also difficult to shoot.
TroyHOST
46:22
Accounts described the material taking roughly two weeks to complete just for that sequence.
TroyHOST
46:28
And I think I like this, Brad, only because we're going to be talking about this director this week on another podcast.

BradHOST
62:27
Um, And they lay that groundwork like pretty early.
TroyHOST
62:31
Well, that's a good point about sort of the storytelling framework on this thing.
TroyHOST
62:36
Dylan, did you struggle with that in terms of trying to decipher what was reality versus what is happening in Rupert's head? Or was that pretty easy to follow? Yeah.
DylanGUEST
62:47
I think I thought it was like for the most part, I think it was pretty obvious on like which ones were the like the dreams he was having.
Mike Back At YouHOST
7:03
There was such a gap between when we recorded that episode and when it released that I forgot all about the perfect blue betrayal where you casually mentioned recently.
Mike Back At YouHOST
7:10
watching perfect blue uh which which yeah it was very uh surprising to me because my last memory of that film was having a conversation with you where you told me to hold off on watching it because your wife caroline wanted to watch it with us so that was quite the surprise to me but it was fun talking about things like that and your hypothetical alternate cut of the movie where it's just cutting out the line that rupert pupkin has a fake gun because you thought it was real that's fun stuff
Mike The FabHOST
7:35
I got to ask.
Mike The FabHOST
7:37
So like listening to it again this week after not having, you know, engaged with the subject matter in the period of time between when we recorded and when it released, I really felt very strongly.
Tim SestitoHOST
42:04
And I think, I think back to, um, King of comedy.
Tim SestitoHOST
42:09
And Rupert pumpkin has a crazy person to work off of.
Tim SestitoHOST
42:15
You know what I mean?
Tommy ThevenetHOST
42:16
The Sandra Bernard
Mike Back At YouHOST
10:39
And we get our first appearance of Robert De Niro bright and early in this film at 1 minute and 33 seconds.
Mike Back At YouHOST
10:46
He plays the infamous character Rupert Pupkin, which I think is one of the great all-time character names in cinema.
Mike The FabHOST
10:54
Yeah.
Mike The FabHOST
10:55
One of the great bits that we get throughout this film, I'm sure you'll talk about at least a handful of them specifically, but like essentially no one ever says his name correctly.

Mike The FabHOST
17:39
And he observes that something very ironic about life, which is so true.
Mike The FabHOST
17:43
That is an incredibly profound observation.
Mike Back At YouHOST
17:46
Yeah, that that is surprisingly insightful coming from Rupert Pupkin, because it
Mike The FabHOST
17:50
is absolutely true.
David SimsHOST
7:40
He's pretty tough.
David KrumholtzGUEST
7:40
I mean, Rupert Pupkin is...
Griffin NewmanHOST
7:42
Rupert Pupkin's not great.
David KrumholtzGUEST
7:44
No.
David SimsHOST
7:44
Yeah, but he's gonna what? He's...
David KrumholtzGUEST
8:46
You know, all this stuff.
David KrumholtzGUEST
8:47
And-
Griffin NewmanHOST
8:47
He's like Rupert Pupkin in that sense.
James GrayGUEST
30:55
I said, you have five months in Rome.
James GrayGUEST
30:57
And all of a sudden, I felt like Rupert Pupkin.
James GrayGUEST
30:59
Six weeks? I can't give you the six weeks.
James GrayGUEST
31:01
Anyway.
