Running Up That Hill

Man with a Child in His Eyes, yeah, incredible.

Running Up That Hill was pretty amazing in 85.

And we all chose our favourite Kate Bush song for the flannel panel, the staff list at the top of the magazine for this issue, and I chose Hello Earth.

But apart from those few, I wasn't familiar with a lot of the choices.

And Chris Needs was actually at the famous show at the Planetarium or the unveiling of...

the Hounds of Love album, at the Planetarium in 1985, because there's a photo of him with Kate Bush and youth, X of Killing Joke, photographed deep in conversation.

And indeed, he does draw on conversations with Kate Bush when elucidating the genesis and the development of songs like Hello Earth, and Running Up That Hill, Deal With God, Cloudbusting.

You know, there are plenty of quotes from Kate herself.

Same with Ingrid Michaelson, like extremely talented, but I only ever heard her music in a caribou coffee in the Midwest.

You know, weirdly enough, I always heard Kate Bush's Running Up That Hill at the pharmacy getting my antidepressants.

Yeah.

And so I had always associated Running Up That Hill with CVS and thought it was just like the most boring, dumb, horrible song.

And then it had its big moment with Stranger Things.

And now it's, you know, for me, the association has changed enough that I love the song.

They're saying younger audiences instantly find songs from the 80s all the way to the 2000s in music and in movies and television shows.

The best example I can think of recently would have been when Running Up That Hill by Kate Bush exploded on the charts again in Stranger Things.

And then everybody got mad at me when I said the correct thing, that the placebo version of that song is the better version.

But, you know...

I don't know who that is.

She did Running Up That Hill, Martin.

Had a resurgence because of Stranger Things in 2022, I think.

2023, maybe.

Let's go.

Question one: who sang the 1985 song Running Up That Hill that had a massive resurgence a few years back thanks to the show Stranger Things? [beep] [beep] That's Kate Bush.

Fun fact, it was a bigger hit the second time around for Kate.

It went to number three in 1985, and it went all the way to number one in 2022.

I give you a name, you decide if you think that person is still alive or not so much.

Today, Chuck Berry, rock and roll pioneer.

Think the songs Johnny B. Goode, think You Never Can Tell.

Is Chuck Berry still alive or not so much? [beep] [beep] Look, not so much, but he only died a little while ago in 2017.

But yeah, this is cool.

Nothing crazy to report other than they segue very nicely into running up that hill.

Yeah, it's mid-set, two goons post-gem before the cover.

I don't know.

And I have no issue with that, but I'm just running out of things to say about it.

Especially when it shows up in a show like this.

And then, yeah, the segue to running up that hill is really cool.

And I'll take that one in the second set anytime.

Not a song that I return to often, but there's something about it that's really good.

I loved the Running Up That Hill and God.

There are two of those shows and one of them, I think it's the first one, but I'm not sure.

One of them is particularly special to me for reasons I can't put my finger on.
