Run Silent, Run Deep

One of the

most realistic sub films I think ever was, was run silent, run deep, which was a Clark Gable played the, the captain there.

who was on a personal mission to, um, justify something that he had been thrown out of, relieved of duty before.

But all of the military jargon was right, and a lot of terminology that we've heard as just kind of figures of speech actually came from that.

All these things that kind of put command at question and that's what we wanted to do in this episode.

Yeah, my first, and it's funny, I haven't actually ever seen the entire movie, but my first thought was, oh, it's kind of like Crimson Tide and a little bit Hunt for Red October.

Like, oh my God, this has gone totally nautical.

Like this is very different than Star Trek, the motion picture in a way that was almost jarring only to come and embrace it and appreciate it over time in such a, you know, and because obviously he was influenced by things, not only, you know, Napoleonic era, but he was also influenced by the, things like The Enemy Below and Run Silent, Run Deep and all these great submarine movies, which was so brilliant because, you know, Terry, in a way, and I don't know if you talked about this, you were in a very similar situation to Nick in the sense that he's coming off this hugely expensive Star Trek The Motion Picture, right? And he's basically given the show under the TV division to make a movie for...

You know, I think it was $11 million, $12 million and basically, you know, say, OK, you got to do a movie for this amount of money and incredibly challenging.

And there was this release date with Picard.

Like, there's a lot of these movies.

Run Silent, Run Deep.

They all kind of follow off of this one.

And we actually looked at Ice Station Zebra at the start of this year.

And there's a way through.

And basically they say, be quiet.

Run silent, run deep.

I held my breath.

Because it's funny, because we had a debate back in maybe the first or second movie.

Probably run silent, run deep, because it was the one about the revenge and Burt Lancaster taking command.

And you called it a mutiny.

He was the captain of the USS Triton on Operation Sandblast, which was the first submerged circumnavigation of the world.

And, uh, he's probably best known as an author, and particularly for, uh, his novel Run Silent, Run Deep.
