Brendan FanningGUEST

If you look at fellas who played for Ireland in the 70s, second rowers or back rowers they're six foot maybe six one you know they're short asses compared to what's playing the game now the explosion in sports science has just transformed the game and world rugby are running as fast as they can to try and keep up because it is a crazily dangerous game and then there's the whole concussion element and If you have two people running, you can't condition your brain, obviously, but you can condition your body.
Brendan FanningGUEST
13:07
So if you're fitter and faster and stronger than your old man who brought you down to the rugby club to start in the first place, then it makes it a pretty dangerous pastime.
Brendan FanningGUEST
13:17
Did you ever feel like it was dangerous when you were playing it?
Hannah TyrrellGUEST
13:20
no i don't um i think if you go into it with an element of fear or that kind of you might get injured you might get hurt you're probably more likely to do that like for me coming from club at all belvedere even though i was a very late comer to rugby at 23 like we were taught the techniques and everything how to fall and all the rest and does that mitigate the risk yes absolutely it doesn't mean you're not going to get injured no not at all but i think if you go in with an element of i could get injured here you probably will get injured because your body's going to tense up a little bit and put you in the wrong situations um yeah luckily for me i had a couple of injuries in my time dislocated shoulder a couple of broken eye sockets but uh they kind of were just they just happened as opposed to um yeah like they just happened it was part of the game and you just kind of get on with it

Austin.
Ernst RoetsGUEST
6:33
But it's the job of politicians and civil society organizations to try to deal with these issues.
Ernst RoetsGUEST
6:38
And so even though Ragby is useful to a certain sense, I don't think the fact that Ragby works should be an indication that politics would work in South Africa as well.
Ferial HaffajeeHOST
6:48
Maybe I wear rose-colored spectacles too often and do see it as the metaphor of what we could be.
Ferial HaffajeeHOST
6:55
But I want to talk about Zanin a little bit.
Mark HallHOST
38:45
They would use, so it would be rugby football and association football.
Mark HallHOST
38:51
So rugby football became slang and it was called rugger.
Mark HallHOST
38:54
And posh kids today will still, yeah, they shortened it to Rugger.
Mark HallHOST
38:59
And then association football was then shortened to ASOC, which then in turn became soccer.
Mark HallHOST
39:08
And so then it was either play Rugger or soccer.
Mark HallHOST
39:12
And that's where the word came from, which I think is crazy.
Mark HallHOST
39:17
