In the 1950s, there was a famous incident, episode that really rocked Israel.

It was called the Kastner trial.

And this guy, Rudolf Kastner, was lauded as part of the Jewish establishment, a big guy in the agency, who saved the Jews of Hungary.

And he was celebrated as somebody who saved the Jews of Hungary.

Hundreds of Jews, he was able to negotiate with the Nazis to save these Jews.

And somebody wrote a pamphlet, this old Jew wrote a pamphlet, proving that Kastner really didn't save that many Jews.

He saved his friends, and he could have saved a lot more Jews, because by the time the Nazis came to Hungary, the Holocaust was known.

It was clear that the Jews of Hungary were doomed, and if Kastner was a real hero, he would have blown the whistle and saved hundreds of thousands of Jews of Hungary.

They're negotiating with the Nazi regime for it to release some of the Jews, and so this gets interpreted as collaboration, uh, right? But, but of course there is a big difference between negotiating for somebody's release and collaborating with them.

And his dissertation also retells the story of Kasztner, which is, uh, in, in, in, in an extremely distorted way-

... uh, which, you know, Kasztner was just, uh, was a Hungarian Jew, a member of the Zionist, uh, group, um, in Hungary who was trying to save, uh, Jews from the Nazis, and, you know, so it's a very painful and complex story.

Uh, obviously, a lot of Hungarian, most Hungarian Jews perished in Auschwitz, so there are a lot of accusations of that Kasztner actually saved his own, and, and he could have saved many more.

So it's a very painful point for the Jewish people, you know, and the Soviets are, like understood very, very well that you can use these kind of moments of fracture, right, these poi- painful points where the, the truth isn't, where things aren't black and white.

They can take it and tell the story in a tendentious way that, and then weaponize it against the people themselves, right? And so, so instead of this having been a, instead of this being a tragedy, it's presented as an act of intentional treachery and intentional collaboration with the Nazis, again, in an attempt to show that, and this is really the point of Abbas's dissertation, is that Zionists, uh, collaborated with the Nazis.
