If you're just joining us actually, and you missed Anne, who kicked the show off today, I, I would really recommend going to RTE Listen and, and taking a bit of time to sit down and, and listening to her story, 'cause it was an incredible story, and it was a story of, of fraud and romance scamming that involved Kinsale and Ghana and gold merchants and emails and canceled flights and malaria and 11,000 euro down the Swanee.

The podcast that helped bring George Gibney to justice, with Mark Horgan
M
6:01Mark HorganGUEST
And she was really helpful in the early stages of getting this to, you know, a treatment that was really strong that we could go to the BBC with and kind of be confident that you know, they wouldn't want to miss out on doing this with us.
M
6:16Mark HorganGUEST
And then also it was, it became in my head more clearly a investigative, sorry, a long form series, 10 parts when I got Cass involved because I just knew how good Ciarán Cassidy was at at editing documentaries, like his ability to kind of tell stories has, you know, his radio documentaries and RT Radio 1 were phenomenal.
M
6:42Mark HorganGUEST
They were world class, you know.
M
6:45Mark HorganGUEST
And I think he's like one of the best documentary, audio documentary makers to ever come out of Ireland.
M
7:13Mark HorganGUEST
But the BBC was perfect for us because he's also...
M
7:19Mark HorganGUEST
Gibney was really connected to British swimming.
M
7:21Mark HorganGUEST
Really, you know, he was really linked to major figures that we uncovered as the podcast went on, like Charlie Wilson and Hammy Smith and these kind of major figures that were in UK swimming that were... you know helped Gibney out but Gibney also had that archive you know there was an archive of Gibney not only in RTE but also like on BBC Northern Ireland that meets up there and so you know really how the doors that the BBC open for you and you know the kind of attitude people in Ireland have which I still think exists to hearing that okay this is on the BBC as opposed to an Irish media for better or worse you know it opens up doors and then I think that was a really helpful thing to us to kind of get interest and for survivors actually to come forward or people who told the story in their minds who told the story and was really difficult for them to do that, to convince them to do it again, that was one of the ways of doing it, you know.
M
8:26Mark HorganGUEST
So I thought the BBC was kind of perfect for us.
