Chapter 4.

The Royal Mail Steamer.

Out, far out on the mighty sea, a large vessel makes her way gallantly over the billows, homeward bound.

She is a royal mail steamer from the southern hemisphere, the Trident, and a right royal vessel she looks with her towering iron hull and her taper masts and her two thick funnels and her trim rigging and her clean decks, for she has an awning spread over them to guard from smoke as well as from sun.

There is a large family on board of the Trident and, like all other large families, its members display marked diversities of character.

They also exhibit, like not a few large families, remarkable diversities of temper.

These also thought of their fellow passengers in the fore-cabin, who of course had a little family or world of their own, with its similar joys and sins and sorrows before the mast.

And there were uproarious bodies who kept the little world lively, sometimes a little too lively.

But it allowed us to take control of all of our end-to-end operations.

So prior to the Yodel acquisition, InPost did use delivery partners such as Royal Mail and Every in the past.

But naturally, that's not as scalable as we would like.

And of course, you're always reliant somewhat then on on the competition.

But I did that for a year and then,

Yeah, I would say a warehouse job where it was for Royal Mail apart from all the letters were just in a giant box and the job was to take the letter and put it in a box behind you and that was it all day long.

It was mind-numbingly painful.

Just boring.

What's something you've been obsessed with lately?

So I don't have my hands on it yet, but I am hotly anticipating the parcel from the Royal Mail coming to my home in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Um, I have an old friend who lives in Madrid, and she sent me a picture, she, like, sent me a DM picture of this magazine.

She walked into her bookstore and they, she saw these magazines, like, up on the wall, and she was like ... damn, Jocelyn needs that," and took a picture and sent it to me, and she's like, "Have you heard of this?" And I was like, "No, I haven't." Um, although I know that, like, I'm going to say the name, I promise.

And remind us now, how many residents does it reach? How many does it engage with?

So it's 52,000 homes that receive the magazine, either through Royal Mail or through some of the places that we drop magazines into, some of the Sainsbury's and Tesco in Brooklyn and places like that, along with the bookshops.

And also I have some deliverers of kids, local kids in like Chertsey, Adelston, Newhall that deliver around their area.

So potentially it's over 100,000 readers.

And basically, we rolled out about 1,200 post boxes into them using this Nestle contract and then sold advertising to other people.

So the thing was, then we sold that, ironically, to the Royal Mail, which was a great deal.

And there were lots of stories around that.

But the thing was, with the cash machines, it had definitely been in my mind that this lady had said, we want cash machines.
