Royal Institution

These small experiments have initiated a movement in maritime transport which is fully comparable to that brought about on land by the invention of the railway locomotive.

Again, in 1901, Sir Humphrey Davy gave his first lecture at the Royal Institution in London, where he had just been installed as a professor, and began that long series of investigations into the chemistry of common things which, taken up by his successor Faraday, gave to the United Kingdom the first start in some of those industries depending upon a knowledge of organic chemistry and the use of certain essential oils.

Public attention at the beginning of the 19th century, however, was directed anywhere but towards these small commencements of mighty forces which were to revolutionize the industrial world, and through it also the social and political.

If in those days Cornwall was ever referred to, it was not by any means in connection with Trevithick and his steam engine which would run on rails, but by way of reference to the relations of the Prince of Wales to the Duchy and the proportion of its revenues which belonged to him from birth.

There's this sort of universe of possibilities, but how do we identify the crystal that's going to form a anode in the next generation of batteries? So that's one of the challenges that I face.

And to put it into context, what might we look for in one of these new materials? So again, if you go back to sort of when the Royal Institution was founded, so in the time of Faraday, there was the Daniel cell.

And this is one of the first commercialized batteries.

It was actually used to power early telegraphs in London.

Afterwards, in 1882, Professor Zittel of Munich published the same conclusion.

He certainly was not a manufacturer, nor was he a merchant or a gentleman farmer.

His name was strange to the scientific and learned societies, and he was never known to take part in the sage deliberations of the Royal Institution or the London Institution, the Artisans' Association, or the Institution of Arts and Sciences.

He belonged, in fact, to none of the numerous societies which swarm in the English capital, from the Harmonic to that of the Entomologists, founded mainly for the purpose of abolishing pernicious insects.

Phileas Fogg was a member of the Reform, and that was all.

I came by invitation to attend a meeting of the Edinburgh Ladies Emancipation Society.

The meeting was held on Monday evening last, at which William Kraft gave, for the first time since his arrival in this country, a history of his escape from Georgia two years ago, together with his recent flight from Boston.

A sixteen month's residence has not yet familiarized me with the change.

I paid a visit to the Royal Institute and inspected the very fine collection of paintings, statues, and other productions of art.

The collection in the Institute is not to be compared to the British Museum at London or the Louvre in Paris, but is probably the best in Scotland.
