internationally there's significant variation in practice so to help us understand how the guidelines are developed and what they actually say we're joined by Paul Southall and Jeff Shelton two of the authors

thanks for having me on both so yeah my name is Paul Southall I'm an anaesthetic consultant in Worcester and in addition to that I am the national sustainability lead for the Royal College of Anesthetists I'm on the college council and I'm the lead environmental advisor for the college

I'm a consultant anaesthetist in Manchester.

They pretend that their anxiety is immigrants taking kind of blue-collar vocational jobs.

I think increasingly what is upsetting some people in Britain is they don't like the fact that if you go to the Royal College of Anaesthetists-

... and see the people becoming doctors, and most of the people becoming professionals, dentists, doctors-

Academically, we're in very strong shape today.

Dr Kevin Fong has degrees in medicine, astrophysics, aerospace engineering and is a fellow of the Royal College of Anaesthetists.

We've got Professor Alice Roberts.

She warmed up for her degree in medicine with a BSc in anatomy and went on to get a PhD in paleopathology.

So when I joined the anaesthetic training in about 2000, they brought out the first couple of numbers in intensive care, and I applied to do that and got appointed on a dual anaesthetic intensive care post.

Intensive care is a speciality that was originally under Royal College of Anesthetists.

And then I think it's about 2010 or so, It started accepting trainees from non-anesthetic backgrounds.

And as part of that, what was the Faculty of Intensive Care has just become its own college, with a view to making sure that we protect how we train our intensive care physicians in the same line as they do in America or Europe, Canada,

You don't want to put too many words onto the slides.

The next topic we move on to was or is even the new Royal College of Anesthetists guidance.

Again, another question that got asked in the form of making a presentation about the state of the nation report by the Royal College of Anesthetists and what the implications were for the department.

Now, the panel, obviously, or at least some people in the panel will know what that document says, or they would have discussed it before you came in.

They know the contents of it.

They think of it more as a prompt sheet for you, but sometimes the slides will need to have some kinds of information.

If you do want to put something on it, you think it needs it, then some examples of things that can go on slides are things like a powerful graph or a photograph or one striking statistic.

So for example, that number 2,250 is, I think that's the number of anesthetists or consultant anesthetists short in the country from the Royal College of Anesthetists report.
