An all-star lineup indeed, I would say.

Alvin Nelson, this guy also was a member of the St. Louis-based band, George Hudson's band.

Such a beautiful ballad by the great John Coltrane.

From the album Impressions, a 1963 release with John Coltrane on tenor saxophone, Jimmy Garrison on bass, McCoy Tyner on piano, and on that track, Roy Haynes on drums.

And we started out the set with a live version of Impressions, also featuring the great John Coltrane quartet, with the addition of Eric Dolphy on alto saxophone, and that was from the complete 1961 Village Vanguard recordings, a five-CD set.

And that set is dedicated to the great John Coltrane on the centennial of his birth, which will be celebrated this week on September 23rd.

82 was like maybe the last bit of...

I mean, let's face it, Roy Haynes, Miroslav Vituas, and Chick Corea played at the White House in 82.

There was some light there.

But by 83, 84, the darkness, and, of course, anyway.

I was still learning where the notes were and it was nice to have a drummer that wasn't wiping me out, you know.

But my first drummer was Roy Haynes.

I played with him for a week up at Stan Getz in Boston.

And then he was living there, so he didn't want to come to the rest of the work.

And he did this for the independent Jubilee label.

recorded some singles for Jubilee on August 13th, 1950, a group that also had Bud Johnson on tennis sax, John Collins, guitar, Jimmy Jones at the piano, Tommy Potter on bass, and Roy Haynes on drums.

And then a pretty straightforward ballad treatment of Edith Piaf's La Vie en Rose.

John Collins on guitar and the rhythm section did a little nice twist at the end of La Vie en Rose to liven it up with Jimmy Jones, Tommy Potter, and Roy Haynes.

I started playing some R&B gigs and some jazz gigs here and there.

But I kind of took that time as an opportunity to see a lot of the masters play, like Roy Haynes was still around.

I saw him play at the Blue Note.

I saw Al Foster at Smoke.

Before that, Gary Burton vibraphone, Chick Corea piano bass, Pat Metheny guitar, Roy Haynes drums, and Dave Holland at the bass.
