I'm gonna take it on."
4:37
Yeah.
4:38
Well, so I am a total, like if I say I'm gonna do something, I'm like, "All right," like I'm gonna figure this out, right? When you and I met, I said, "Sure, this, this makes total sense.
4:45
Of course we're gonna focus on these things." And so, you know, I always have to find my own way of do- doing things.
4:50
Anyone that's familiar with the Y Institute, I'm a Y of challenge, so of course I'm gonna make up my own way of doing things.
4:55
But so I looked at the little, you know, calendar, not calendar, but the little grid or whatever that you gave, and I was like, "Okay, that, that doesn't work for me." So I thought, okay, like I always have my Google Drive open, and so I opened up a Google, Google Doc, and I kind of started creating, like, journal entries and, like, the date and, like, the headings of the different areas.
5:16
You know, so mindset, connect, learn, breathe, reflect.

5 MINS LATER

10:31
That, that is so important, that connection piece, but why do you think you ignore it and allow yourself to go into busy, productive, human doing versus human being? Like, is there, like, this, um, this, like, crossroads that you can identify that says, "This is where I veer off and this is when I don't"?
1:25
[laughs]
1:25
I had an executive of another client say, "Am I failing coaching?" Like, they get this very self-deprecating, like you see their humanity come through.
1:35
And I would say to them, "Trust me.
1:37
No, you're human.
1:38
And by the way, I've seen this so many times, like, it's not even funny.
1:41
I've become convinced there's only, like, eight or 10 of these, whatever you wanna call it, that is getting in our way.
1:47
Like, you're normal, you're normal, you're normal." And so that, that had been going on for years.

16 MINS LATER

18:04
[laughs]
11:39
Can, can you do that? Give us kind of the overview.
11:42
100%.
11:43
Well, and this feeds into the stories and what makes things scary.
11:47
So just similar to you and the work that we do, my brain works in patterns.
11:52
And over the past decade plus, as we've consulted with organizations, coached individual leaders, worked with teams, I just started to see all these patterns of where people get stuck, the narratives they tell themselves, where they can't grow, where they get stuck with change.
12:08
And so when I launched my podcast, Show Up as a Leader in the Fall of 2020, I wanted to normalize this experience for listeners.
12:16
And so I ask all of my guests to share a self-limiting story that they still tell themselves.

15 MINS LATER

27:24
Can you speak to that? Like, is there any hope? Is there, like, how do you go in and help that mindset shift change to bring about cultural shift in something that's like the Titanic?
5:53
Mm-hmm
5:54
... and we are wired, as you said in the intro, for self-protection.
5:59
Our brains are on high alert for threat.
6:01
We're looking for where we can feel in control, where we can find safety, belonging, all of those things.
6:07
And when that gets threatened, all kinds of, uh, crazy survival instincts that don't usually serve us well but we don't realize it kick in.
6:14
And when we're in that spaceWe think it's just us.
6:18
We're the only ones that struggle with this.
10:29
You are who you are.
