Roman Ritual

I'm going to let you guys think about that because that is something that is still being debated in the religious community from some of the things that I've seen.

So now we are kind of sitting around 1614, and this is where we get the Council of Trent's Roman ritual, which introduced the idea that people who died by suicide as a result of, in their words, insanity, shouldn't be punished according to the old Council of Braga's rules, which is like you can't be buried in our cemeteries, you can't get the ceremonies, all the type of stuff.

But the caveat with this is that in that time of history, things like despair and emotional distress were seen as sins or moral failings, not really medical or psychological issues.

So it's like, OK, we're introducing this concept of mental illness as a reason, as an acceptable reason to die by suicide.

But we're having a very limited definition of what actually counts as mental illness.

So that kind of stayed the status quo in the Christian church for a really, really long time until 1978.

So Council of Trent's Roman Ritual, 1614.

1978 is our next benchmark.
