Roma Mitchell

There wasn't a single sitting Supreme Court judge who was female.

There had been one, Dame Roma Mitchell in South Australia, but she had retired.

Not a single Supreme Court judge.

And I look now and no one bats an eyelid when I sit on a ceremonial court and it's three women, as it should be.

This state has in fact had two governors that did not have partners, and one as recently as, uh, in the early nineties.

Dame Roma Mitchell served as the twenty-eighth Governor of South Australia.

She never married.

She was not only the first female governor of the state, but an unmarried holder of the office.
