Roger Nicole

Friends, for us as a church, this means that we realize as we look at a chapter like this and accounts like this, that infants can't be baptized, that we will baptize only believers, The household baptisms of the Philippian jailer here, or Crispus two chapters later in Acts 18, are sometimes used to defend infant baptism.

But the problem with those passages, as a professor of theology of mine, Roger Nicole, used to say, is there are no babies in these passages.

And so it's not a proof of infant baptism.

You just have the word household, and there's no necessity of there being an infant in something called a household.

And I'm like, no, that doesn't make any sense.

And so I talked to Klein and Nicole, and I was a teaching assistant under Roger Nicole, and we discussed this.

And he pointed out that Patrick Fairbairn, the 19th century Scottish biblical theologian who wrote the two-volume work, Typology and Scripture, defended the New Testament writer's approach to the old, that we ought to not just accept what they're doing, we ought to imitate what they're doing.

And so I adopted what was then the minority report among evangelicals.
