Rocket from the Crypt

Yeah, one of

my favorite shows ever was Rocket from the Crypt at CBGB's.

Because my roommate, who was in the talent department where they would decide which videos went on air at MTV, we lived on 7th Street.

So we lived just a couple blocks from CB's.

So it's like literally everyone from CB's came back to our apartment.

We had a party for Rocket from the Crypt.

Right.

And it was amazing.

Yeah.

I got it from Rocket From the Crypt.

I heard their version first before I heard Red Sea.

Red Sea version.

We knew it was our song

I think the first time I heard it was Rocket From The Crypt, on All Systems Go, they covered it.

It unfortunately does sound like you're saying, "Balls on my back."

So, yes, I'm also still a fan.

Number 23, things we're still a fan of, On A Rope by Rocket From The Crypt, down from 18 last week.

Third and final week on the chart.

Very brief, but very loud and beautiful run, which feels appropriate for such a fun record, Ed.

It's been such a while since I listened to him.

I got one or two bits, mostly Rocket from the Crypt, but...

I think Rick bought it and then hated the weight of it and then he said that he's used it on pretty much every White's every Hot Snakes and Rocket from the Crypt album he goes normally it's his overdub one so he normally does all the rhythms and then if he does any like little parts over the top he always use this one but he's selling it off I think he sold off some amps as well I

Like, fast-paced kind of, what is this? So somewhere in there, I would have started ordering records from Lookout, too, which was, you know, the label Green Day was on from the West Bay.

But the first show I remember seeing that really changed it, I had to have been a little older, was Rocket from the Crypt.

I went to see them in Memphis, and it's like a little hot charity tour.

they were on it you know this tiny club hot as summer in the south and just the horns and the energy and everyone in the crowd going wild like i mean the crowd couldn't be much bigger than this room maybe two of these rooms yeah you know perfect vibe catches yeah but even arkansas always had a good punk scene like Like, in the beginning, I wasn't in the punk scene itself, because I never played in a band, but I was at all the shows, you know, like, and I remember seeing, like, Los Crudos play at the fucking, like, there was this Belvedere they had next to the river that you could just go plug in at.

And Rocket from the Crypt, man, thanks for mentioning them.

One of the best live shows I've ever seen.

So maybe we just see it as a step on their journey, really.

Number 18 is Rocket from the Crypt and On a Rope, down six places from when it was a new entry at 12 last week.

Second week in the chart.

The feedback we've gotten from this is absolutely incredible.

We very much enjoy our friends on Blue Sky, by the way.

We had a lovely message from one of our pals over the pond.

Our lovely pal Darren says, as someone who went to college in San Diego in the 1990s, I was not expecting to hear Rocket from the Crypt on this week's Shark Life podcast, much less a Drive Light Jehu reference.

I will never understand what makes it across the pond, although this one is, of course, a banger.

Number 12, we have another new entry.

This is Rocket From The Crypt and a track called On A Rope.

You probably remember this one.

I certainly do.

Yeah.

So John Rice, he's a prominent and recurring figure in American underground scenes for decades, basically.

But Rocket from the Crypt are probably the best-known band that he's been in for the average punter.

They're good fun.

Worcester still records and tours with Super Chunk, but has also been a full-time member of both the Bob Mould Band and the Mountain Goats since 2009.

John is also an in-demand session slash live drummer, having worked with Amy Mann, Alejandro Escovido, the new pornographers Nick Cave, Rocket from the Crypt, Ben Gibbard, and many others.

It was an absolute pleasure to have John on the show, and we had a great time talking about the movie The Exorcist
