Robert Henri

Because we love the idea of using a camera to explore the world, and that's going to have a cost, and it's a cost that we're probably gonna need to be willing to spend in order to indulge ourselves in this wonderful pursuit called fine art photography, however you define it.

I think it was Robert Henri who said, quote, "The art life is a privilege for which you need to be willing to pay," close quote.

And I think there's some truth to that.

Some photographers are blessed economically.

William Merritt Chase, again, his painting to look at here is the Portrait of Whistler.

Then there's Robert Henri, who has an interesting... portrait of a jockey named Ambrose Clark.

These are things that you'll find around here.

They are sometimes rotated into storage.

No, this is how you educate a person.

And one of the best things I ever read, and it's a great book, it's called The Art Spirit by Robert Henri, the American painter.

And it's just little essays about learning how to be an artist.

And now I'm not really an artist, but I love this book.

And I like your art or I like your comic or whatever that you're doing.

And I mean, so many times people go, ah, yeah, but you know, I'm, i don't i don't make a living doing this or whatever and it's like they have to there has to be this sort of like disclaimer that like there's some level of inauthenticity to this because i you know simon schuster hasn't you know shuttled me away in a helicopter or whatever um so it's uh that that is in my mind a lot like that kind of conversation that that idea a lot of of uh what, what metrics someone, you know, and I, I really liked the book art spirit by Robert Henry.

He's a painter, an Ashcan, a painter from the early 1900s Ashcan painter.

And, um, there's a book called a composition of painting by, um, um, Edgar Payne and both of them are they're very dense heavy sort of reflections on like what it means to be an artist like even the book on composition a lot of it is like you know arranging shapes of trees and whatever landscapes but like he has a lot in the beginning that's sort of his treatise for like what is an artist what how do we define ourselves as an artist and and describe ourselves as an artist.
