He's born Robert Gray.

He later adopted the stage name Robert Gotobed, but weirdly, this was way before the punk movement and all the cutesy punk nicknames came as a trend, because that had actually been his family name and it was, like, maybe his grandfather who decided to change it to make it easier for people to say.

And then later, other punk rock scenesters and fans all just assumed that it was a stage name, like Cheetah Chrome or Johnny Thunders or what have you, but no, it's apparently a legit old English last name.
