Was there anything particular in that specific area around representation that you uncovered that you were surprised about or something that a point in particular that you thought was really important that specifically represented Australian queer film and TV?

Look, I suppose that there were a couple of surprises in that, in talking to people, both queer and straight audiences and cisgender audiences, around what the impact of representation was For straight and cisgender audiences, there was this tendency to think not in terms of individual texts.

Quite often, they couldn't remember anything that was particularly significant, but they remembered changes in film and television in general.

Some would position it as a kind of an encroachment of queerness into their television, and we didn't want to ask them too much.

But for others, it was this encountering more regularly that quite often changed their views.

So we're doing this, we were doing a lot of this research two or three years after marriage equality.

And so that was in the minds of lots of the mainstream Australian public.
