Rivers of London

A fun update from earlier in September is that I was able to play another session of Rivers of London, the RPG by Chaosium, with Mick Hand as the game master.

This gave us a chance to take my character, PC Balcombe, from our previous foray into the magical streets of London out for another case file, and this one was a doozy.

A video of that lengthy session, more than four hours, will appear in whole or probably in parts in the weeks to come.

On that theme, a series of posts about the Rivers of London novels has been appearing on the written blog throughout this month.

New posts appear on Sundays.

We're nearing the end of the series with perhaps two more posts to go at the time of this recording.

The series looks at the novels as influences on the tone and themes players might include in a Rivers of London RPG campaign.

But for me, that one hits the sweet spot of epic fantasy, a little bit of thoughtful, you know, philosophy, big stakes and big ideas.

And here I'd also mention the Rivers of London series by veteran author Ben Aronovich.

It follows the career of a London police officer assigned to the mystical and strange cases division because he has some magical wizardly powers.

powers that he's developing and training in.

What's interesting about that series, Rivers of London, is that it's told both in novels, in prose form, and also in graphic novels, but they're not the same story.

It's not that the books are novelizations of the comics or that the comics are adaptations of the novels.

They're different stories altogether.

And so if you want to get the whole Rivers of London experience, you've got novels and novellas and also graphic novels.
