River Windrush

So I'm going to cross the pond because apparently we've run out of normal soccer pitches.

So in Burton-on-the-Water in England, they hold an annual soccer match in the River Windrush.

Hundreds of people show up to watch players literally get into the river, take their shoes off, and try and play soccer while fighting the current.

So this isn't just some random pickup game either.

Point number three.

Please somebody explain the River Windrush football match to me.

Where is this? Is it some kind of Gloucestershire tradition, playing football in ankle-deep water?
