River Torrens

Interestingly, von Einem first became known to the police when he saved the life of a drowning man named Roger James.

Now, Roger James had been having a clandestine tryst with his gay lover, Dr. George Duncan, down by the River Torrens on the night of May the 10th, 1972.

At that time in Australia, homosexuality was actually still illegal.

And the banks of the River Torrens was a known hookup for gay men to meet up in secret.

That night, Roger and Dr. George were attacked by a group of unknown men and thrown into the river.

Dr. George drowned.

And between them is Adelaide itself, a long, relatively flat strip of suburbs, parks and roads stretching north and south.

At the centre is the city, a grid of streets surrounded by parklands with the Adelaide Oval, the River Torrens and the CBD forming the heart of the metropolitan area.

But as you travel north from the city, the character changes.

The buildings become lower, the streets become wider, the suburbs become more residential and industrial, and the landscape begins to open up.

so a bit earlier we talked about dugongs and giant cuttlefish and that was kind of depressing but there's a more upbeat item about platypus which is the extraordinary australian mammal that lays eggs and has a duck like bill which is the next story so south australian government has announced it will provide four million dollars so that adelaide's river torrens can become a home to the platypus again.

And this will build on work that has been done for several years to prepare the way for reintroducing platypus into the Torrens by restoring and rewilding river habitat.

So it's a big win for platypus, which has been extinct on mainland South Australia since the mid-1970s.

He leaves the party along with two friends of his.
